John's Story

I’ve had a great life since high school. I have worn a lot of hats since then. I Graduated & went to Sierra College. and got a AA degree. I Took a job dispatching for Placer County Sheriffs Department (had a blast) got promoted to Deputy at 20 years old, turned 21 while in police academy and worked the streets for a year. Worked in the jail for awhile and at the Tahoe City branch. After a couple years I quit & went to Michigan State University. I wanted that on campus Big Ten college experience and I got it. It was amazing and quite an experience. I associated snow with mountains and had no real idea of what cold was. Wow I learned. Graduated with 2 BA degrees & moved to Hawaii to thaw out. I moved there with my friend Dan Koob, his wife Kim and their baby Eric. We were broke but somehow we all made it. Many good stories there. I went to work for American Hawaii Cruises which did 7 day cruises each week to 4 islands. I lived aboard the vessel and was considered a merchant marine. I had lots of jobs but was mostly a waiter. My last trip was as an officer which was fun as I was the first person to go from crew to officer. Many many fun experiences and new friends. I did this until 1985. I would sign on usually stay 16 weeks then get off ship for a couple of months. This enabled me to go to Europe every summer for about 5 years. Great times with family (my Dad was from Greece) and new friends. I was very happy with Hawaii & wanted to stay so while working on the ship I started looking for a business I could get into involving tourists. On Maui I had some photos developed at a 1 hour photo shop & was impressed that this was possible. Then on Kauai I noticed that a new mall was being built with major stores like Liberty House, Radio Shack, Sears & such. So I decided to open a one hour photo store there and that was one crazy good idea. I did this with very little money and a belief I could do anything. Law of attraction in action by accident. Within a year I had 2 stores open on Kauai and with 5 years I had 4 stores going. From 1985 until 9/11/1992 we basically printed money at the stores. Tourist loved taking pictures and seeing them while on vacation. It was a dream, and I completely loved it. I traveled all the time, spent money like a fool and still was able to pay the bills. I was In my 20s and thankfully I didn’t try saving money I spent it and enjoyed life. I worked hard the first years to get it running right but then I had my fun. Then.In the summer of 1992 I got a call from my brother in Loomis letting me know that Moms Cancer had returned and that I should come home to Loomis for a while. I arrived in May & was surprised to see how advanced her disease was. She was a master at phone calls. I saw for myself she was sick as hell but on the phone she sounded great. I decided to stay and take care of her. It was a moving and difficult 5 months that I will cherish for all my life. She died on 9/8/92. I went and got drunk for 3 days and as I was getting dressed for her funeral a friend called me and said turn on the news. I turned on channel 3 and there was a picture of Kauai on the news with a giant hurricane called Iniki headed for the islands Eastern shore, where my beach house was. I was in shock, my Dad and brother Steve were there too. The hurricane was scheduled to hit in 3 hours at the precise time my moms service was to start. This was 9/11/1992 the day Iniki destroyed the Island of Kauai. Life was never the same after that. When I finally got back to Hawaii 3 days after the storm they weren’t allowing anyone to go to Kauai. A day later I got there and it was super bad. My Koloa Store located in the old dive locker building was the only one of 4 locations that could reopen. We worked hard for the next couple years but the tourism did not return. I ended up with 1 store open that only did a fraction of the business we used to do. The other 3 stores were open for a while but closed one by one in the following years. Deep in SBA loan debt after 4 years of trying to make a come back it was hopeless and I gave up filed chapter 7 bk and then moved back to the mainland which broke my heart. The summer of 1995 was a turning point for me. I had been mad at God for taking my Mom like that at her young age of 54. Maybe religion was my problem. I was a believer but things were not making sense. I was intent on figuring it out so I was very in my head all summer. I was journaling and thinking about life God and what’s it all about. just about every week On Thursday’s my friend Eric would take me and a couple others to San Francisco for what we called our dance safaris. We would start at a club that was the ”Thursday night place” and dance until the sun came up, then go to the end up and dance there until the Friday night club opened. This usually went until Monday around 5 when we would come back to Loomis. You could literally dance somewhere straight thru without stopping. This was a revealing summer for me and it was thru all this craziness that I found my truth. I released myself from the dogma of organized religion and became a spiritual being. I remember the night I had the breakthrough and when it happened I felt 100 pounds lighter. My anger, grief and fear all disappeared. I realized that the universe and life was either random without meaning or perfect beyond my understanding. One or the other and I Knew which one it was. It’s like the lights went on. And once I got this the signs I had asked God for when I was in despair and searching for the why, came to me easily. It was confirmation that I no longer required but was grateful for nonetheless. For a month it was like having magic at my call. This all changed me at the core. I was no longer the person I had been. And that turned out to be a great thing with strings. Law of Attraction doesn’t see good and bad it’s a law that works like any other law. If you believe so it becomes. We are what we think about and we really can do whatever we set out to do if we believe it. When I was young and thoughtless and stupid I truly believed I could do anything in business and so I basically did. I was a selfish successful man who wasn’t a bad guy, I was immature and having fun. But I wasn’t happy and I didn’t think in the long term. Glad for it because I really had fun with it until the hurricane. I had spent the money so anything I had saved would have been lost in those years after the storm. So now it’s 1996 and I’m free of the devil that haunted me since losing mom and trying to live as an honest man who loves family and friends. I was irritating I’m sure because I had learned how important time is and how important friends and family are and I wanted to tell everyone. And I did. I moved to Brazil for 6 months and I lived in Petrolina which is in the middle of the country where few white men are. It was such an adventur...Expand for more
e, like living in the twilight zone. I could speak Portuguese well enough to get something from the store but to keep up with a group of friends at a table as they talk - not a chance. And these misunderstandings lead to many very interesting adventures. I ended up going to Brazil regularly for about 10 years in the 90’s I could write a book about those adventures. They were amazing crazy good times. I drove across the country a few times met incredible people all the time. Very special, I need to return there soon. LIFE STORY TO BE CONTINUED….,.. so I can continue now with my story. The first trip for sale was in February of these Rowan Rowan to trace which translated to 1993 it was a year after my mom died in the island of Kawai was trash starting to get together and it was really know because I saw you people drawing pictures of what they had left of their houses so I called my old friend Ray and said you know that place that you talked about going to Cardinal for that you were about Rio de Janeiro let’s go and we did we had four-star hotel accommodations for the entire 10 days and we had tickets on United Airlines at the airport we started drinking before Trippie Redd started I said Ray Lane what language do they speak on there he said with his finger wiggle wiggle wiggle it was funny so when I go to play that’s what I did when I wanted to meet somebody and what happened was the captain*came and said stop that they don’t like the fact that you’re staring at them and that started our trip it was a crazy about it I end up staying for four weeks until my visa expired and Ray stay the 12 days but they were great unfortunate heart hotel did not allow us to have gas in the room in which kind of really messed up our plans so we left this way the fact it was repaired and rented an apartment and Ipanema and that was a blessing weekend it was awesome which all the big balls met great people I fell for somebody so well for you some Paulo from Rio took a cab with him and spent the next sound 12 to wire do you say expired he said he said he spoke English but he said he had like 10 origin of vocabulary in that created kind of a disaster but somebody suggested that we go to a place called Porto Seguro because you’re a guy named Danny who ran a hotel and he was also a Berlitz feature of English and you can translate for us to stay there maybe we could help us talk every day so we could just that it was exactly that was great I will let some of my best friends to this day on that trip Pete the owner of couple hotels in a big bunches of land loser Eric And and the Brazilian OK with my friends there on the strip parents have a relieve they said why don’t you just leave Nildo here and come back for next year and that’s what I did it was amazing many things happened during the 10 years I went there the second time I went in February 19 84 and I have been living in Petrolina with Ricky for a year and when I got there she told me aside they know we got to get out of here and from that time on it was crazy if you want to those were here you have to read that book but Ricky was no who seem to be any figured if I was driving through the middle of Brazil in the car so as I and I wasn’t I really was stupid enough to drive across Brazil in a car like that so let’s move on in my life in America during that time I got into real estate I watch with my landlord was doing in San Diego and copy them and actually work that I push my way up a real estate company called sell America USA have some shades in the program a little bit in Reddit when he saw you at 60 house is one summer we came my bosses best Asian but at the same time my aunt who had also sold real estate earlier and was now a tops producing loan officer for Norwest Mortgage and Sacramento suggested I come work there she called me up on Sunday when I was working open houses which I hate it and so are you tired of slapping those signs on Sundays and having people in there in your car come work with me I make six figures a year and I don’t come to work till 10 and I leave whenever I want so I try it and it works my aunt was quite the office diva she even had a tiara everybody respected her she was always right she was scary I was her nephew so I got the wrong treatment from day one it was awesome I lost a pretty good at which was a surprise everybody myself included and the boys are coming in and I started doing loans and then Wells Fargo and Norwest merged they call it a merger of equals the north west Maryland state in place but the company took the Wells Fargo name is everybody thought we got bought out by Wells Fargo what we didn’t we bought Wells Fargo as if I was and I went from my nice office to a bank where I can serve desk and give up give away yo-yos do loans my suck a bass wasn’t wasn’t happy nobody was I cut my cousin who is my aunts son who was training me was working on an idea in technology that he was wouldn’t tell anybody about that he was paddling and when I finally really see information what he was doing route video postcards from tourist places I said let me do the ones in on the cruise ships and so I got the territory of Florida and was sent there too pitch cruise companies and see if we get these video postcards on their ships and lo and behold our first trip we booked the first two cruise lines we talked too. so I took a leave absence for wells Fargo packed up everything I own and off to Florida we went. It was the summer of 1999 and we were going to be rich. However as it turned out what the video postcards were was an emerging and changing technology, on the first cruise I worked everyone Expressed interest but nobody bought. It was a disappointing shock and on that first day j an older gentleman approached me and said send this is a great idea I problem is you gonna be able to do this stuff on your telephone next year.. he was right cruise cards was dead we survived a couple months selling videos of different events on the ship to the passengers and then the business field so I’ve been living in Fort Lauderdale Florida and I have no job and no money and I realized I hadn’t quit Wells Fargo and they were there in Florida not as a banks but as a mortgage company I really taken a leave the absence so I checked in I could just go back to work so I picked a Coral Springs office where the three little offices of producing manager went to work there I did really good we came the number one selling for the officer for 5 miles in of the state of Florida in the first year a lot of money and why connections to real estate and I got into that business there in Fort Lauderdale and after a couple years I have work to hotels were next-door to each other and beach and several properties multi family dwellings etc. and I thought of this right time for the prices so I thought twice so finally right place at the right
