John's Story

5/08 I hope this finds you safe and well. Life has a way of presenting a various number of experiences. Many of them are the best times. Unfortunately, they are not all good. Keep faith with the fact that we are all going through similiar things and we're not alone. Enjoy yourself as much as you can. I am in a the position to have gone through the Northport school system as a student for nine years :and I worked as a gym teacher for 32 years. As a result there are two different groups that I have come to know and some people are in both groups. My mother first came to Northport as a 12 year old. Her father was a farmer in Farmingdale who used to come to Northport on occassion to sell his crops and she came with him when she was a young girl. That was more than 80 years ago. I spent a couple of weeks in the summer here when I was six. My father liked the community, bought land, and had a house built. The community was a sea and a farm community then with the regular cross section of people in a rural town. The milk man delivered to the house. The A. & P. was up by the railroad station. The "old ladies" ran a store at the "five corners" on 25A. Students used to decorate store front windows with murals at Halloween. Laural road school was the high school. This is the first time I have found a spot to actually write something more than the multiple choice profile. None of the answers I put down fit exactly. Anyway it's good to know that your out...Expand for more
there. It has taken me three years to learn how to put a picture in my profile. The method I used was random., so there is no order to them. Eventually I will figure a way to do that. In fact there are more photos I would like to share. Some people have asked me to post a picture of myself. There are a few in the mix. I have always had an interest in photography; and have taken alot of pictures over the years. I still have pictures yet to post. I retired in 2000 after 32 years teaching Physical education in good old Northport High school. It was a pleasure and a privledge to serve the Northport,-East Northport,- Eatons Neck,-Fort Salonga and- Asharoken communites all these years. I am very happily retired and look back on my job with fond memories. Let's face it school is school and alot of people do not like school but, I feel that 95% of my students were excellent human beings and the other 5% were only vocalizing what alot were thinking. The student body were and continue to be a credit to their community and their family. We have alot of good times to remember. Since my job was like most, in one spot, I have done alot of traveling since. I used to run with the wind. Now the wind pushes me along. I wrote a book " In the Shadow of the Flag" after I retired. It in on file in the Library of Congress in Washington. I am going to close for now. Please take care of yourself, your friends, and your family. Stay safe and well. We are all in this thing called life together. Your friend, John
