John's Story
Life
Attended USAF Academy following highschool and graduated in 1980. Flew F-4s in the Air Force for 8 years. Married Betsy Scully (Butler '77) in 1985. We have 3 children age 21 and 19 (twins). I currently work for UPS as a B747 pilot.
School
Biggest crush? I married my biggest crush in highschool. I never quite had the guts to pursue her back then. Later on I did and it all worked out pretty well. We've been married for 22 years and have 3 teenagers.
I was pretty straight laced (or at least gave the impression of straight laced) back in high school. However, I do remember several nights of going through a Stroh's 12 pack while cruising in Larry Smalley's '64 Impala. There is also a vague memory of a car wash, a police station, and Larry Price singing jail house blues in the back of a paddy wagon.
I am fortunate to reach adulthood unscathed from the brushes with trouble but enriched from the many great memories of highschool.
College
Even though the Air Force Academy technically qualifies as a college, it wasn't exactly the college experience. My friends and I tried real hard to make it as much like a normal college as possible. Despite our efforts, there is no way you can turn a noon meal formation, a SA...Expand for more
MI, and CQ into a frat party, beer bust, or a panty raid.
I am fortunate to have received a very nice education at the expense of the taxpayers. It was hard to appreciate it back then as it was shoved up my ass a nickle at a time.
Workplace
Went to work at UPS in 1989. Currently flying the B747-400.
Military
After graduating from the USAF Academy in 1980, I went to pilot training at Laughlin AFB in Del Rio, Texas. I was assigned an RF-4c out of pilot training and did my training at Shaw AFB in Sumter, SC. My first operational tour in the RF-4 was with the KY Air National Guard as an active duty exchange officer from 1982 to 1985. After a brief TDY for Squadron Officer School at Maxwell AFB in Montgomery, AL, I was assigned to the 26th TAC RECON WING at Zweibrucken, Germany from 1985 to 1988. I left active duty in 1988 and came back to the Ky. Air National Guard as an RF-4 Instructor Pilot. Even though the unit was slated to transition to the C-130, I continued to serve the KY ANG full time until the RF-4s were gone. Once the RF-4s were gone, I went to Little Rock to check out in the C-130. I flew the C-130 until 1991. I then separated from the military to devote more time to my family and my new career with UPS.
