John's Story
Life
After High School, attended LCCC and then Blackburn College. After college, worked as a Housepainter and Bartender before joining the USCG in 1988. After Boot Camp in Cape May, NJ,went to my first unit in Salisaw, OK. Spent 2 years on a Buoy Tender on the Arkansas River maintaining Aids to Navigation. In 1990, I went to "A" school in Petaluma,CA (1 hr from San Fran) where I became a Petty Officer 3rd Class Yeoman(personnel). My next stop was back in good ole St. Louis where I was in charge of Pay & Personnel Records for units in the midwest. During that time I was promoted to P.O. 2nd Class. In 1990, I met my future wife Heather while she was attending Principia. We were married in 1992 and shortly after that, we moved to my next duty station in Charleston, SC. ly had my fill of the Coast Guard life and decided not to reenlist. We moved from Charleston to Hartland, MI to be closer to Heather's family. I spent the first six months after discharge hanging drywall while I looked for a "real" job. I accepted a position running a Market Research Office in a mall but the two hour drive was too much. I then move to a Human Resources Firm coordinating the testing of hourly and skilled employees for Ford. I heard about an opening at General Motors and sought it out. I was first hired as a Prototype Buyer. I then moved on to the Crashworthiness group doing analysis and from there moved into my current position as Sr. Specifications Analyst for Experimental V6 engines. In the mean time,my second son,Logan, was born(April 1996)and we bought and renovated our first home. We are now thinking about moving or building a new home and spend most of our time coaching baseball and soccer for the boys. (update 9/4: working at Nissan)
