John's Story

Life My friends consider me someone they would love to be stranded with at a boring party. Apparently my sense of humor has some intrinsic value. Professionally I’m the managing partner of a portfolio management company that is a division of a Wall Street investment firm. I hope to never retire but realize one must walk softly to enjoy the fragrance of life’s roses. I spend a lot of my professional time in Atlanta and I love big cities, especially New York. I enjoy attending the shows on Broadway and especially the ballet. I lost my house in Hurricane Ivan and recently purchased a 160 acre farm about 30 miles north of downtown Pensacola that I’ve converted to a working cattle ranch. I’m only a 38 minute drive from my office. I’m raising Black Angus and Brahman cattle and perhaps Quarter Horses in the future. I need to learn how to ride first. I moved in in late December 2005. I had a cattle farm in north Georgia when I lived in Atlanta and love the lifestyle. Cattle keep you humble. All men are equal in the eyes of an Angus bull, totally insignificant! Following graduation from CHS in 1963 I joined the Navy and Mark went to PJC with the Ft. Walton Mafia..Ron Dudley, Bud Borders, Gary Work, Walt Fredland JV etc. Mark Was drafted in 1966, went to OCS and spent 3 years in th...Expand for more
e Army. Bud graduated from FSU and was a chopper pilot in the war and retired as an Army Col. Gary and Judy Cook got married and Gary is an attorney in Pensacola. Mark is working in Altanta and spends much of his time trading Index futures. Dud is working in San Diego and I visited with him and his wife a few years ago. Sadly JV (John Van Swearingen) died in August of 2003 after a 5 year battle with cancer. I was able to spend a long weekend with him about 4 weeks prior to his death and it remains one of the best experiences of my life. I enrolled at PJC following 3 yeas in the Navy, went to OW and transferred to Auburn in 1968 and graduated in June 1970 with a degree in Economics. I joined Merrill Lynch two days later and 37 years later I still in the investment business. I'm now a Senior Portfolio Manager with Smith Barney in Pensacola after spending more than 20 years in Atlanta. We will have a 45 year reunion next year and everyone who had friends in the Class of 63 will be invited. Jeanie and Harry Ward have been the anchor of our reunion efforts over the years so lets give them some help this time. I'm in the Pensacola phone book and my Ranch is in Molino, Fl listed as Aberdeen Ranch. If you have any news I'll put it on this profile. I'D LOVE TO HEAR FROM YOU! .
