John's Story
Life
Currently living in Lausanne, Switzerland working as a Senior Manager on the Olympic Games for the International Olympic Committee. Married with little girls, Sophia (3.5) and Eva (1.5).
Since finishing at Texas A&M in 1991 with degrees in Architecture and Construction Mgmt, I have lived in England, Australia, Greece, Qatar and have finally settled for a while in Switzerland. I got started working on the Olympic Games back with the Syndey 2000 Organising Committee as a techical manager accross all city venues and stuck with the work becoming a "Games Nomad". In 2007, after completing nearly 3 years in Doha, Qatar working on the Asian Games, I accepted a position with the IOC in Lausanne. I recently finished nearly 2 years of working closely with the Chinese on delivery of the Beijing Games and spent a hell of a lot of time in Beijing, including 6 weeks over the Games period. Now my focus is primarily on London with a bit of work on Vancouver and Sochi (Russia).
My wife, Mellisa, is Australian and we have travelled much of the world together, mostly in Europe, the Middle East and some of Asia, including a number of less touristed spots, such as Iran, Syria (about 10 visits!) and Lebanon. Now that we have kids, the travelling for fun has slowed down a bit :), but we certainly take advantage of our position in the heart of Europe. ...Expand for more
My mother still lives in Houston, at the same house on Taylorcrest in Memorial Plaza where I grew up. We make it back there once a year, but my mum prefers to come visit us now days!
My brother, Matthew, is married with 2 children and has just moved to Kentucky from New Haven, CT where he spent 10 years as a professor in the English Department at Yale.
Over the years, with so much travel and moving around I have lost complete touch with all classmates from Westchester and infact, all my classmates from A&M that I used to hang with! Still, on occasion I do run into someone from the Class of 1985 when visiting back in Houston at a Randall's, or some other local spot, as it seems that quite a few people have either stayed or returned to the area.
For those of you that knew me in High School and I guess you would not be reading this bio if you did not know me...I do still play the guitar. No more bands, but I still find a the time to "put it up to 11". After A&M I did play around for a while with a Band in Houston. We wrote all our own music and played various places such as Fitzgerald's, The Axiom, Pic & Pac and others that I now cannot remember. The music was a sort of heavy-grungy thing in keeping with the late 80's early 90's. It was going well and then I got the opportuntiy to move to London... the rest is, as they say, history.
