John's Story

Life - Seems like only a lifetime ago we ventured out wide-eyed; smack into the "Summer of Love" and a date with your local draft board... So, here's my little boring bio... - Kinda fuzzy and semi-conscious '67-71 - got hungry and went to work in the SD produce markets '71. Started as a warehouseman, became a short-haul, then long-haul semi-truck driver '71 - '79 - Meanwhile, went back to school part time. 3.5 yrs. at Grossmont Coll. - 4yrs. at SDSU (not a record; but qualifies for certified PROFESSIONAL student standing) BA - geography '79 - Married Mary Maestas 1977 (we met at work)-(no Children) - My usual impeccable timing; Got my degree in planning and looking for entry level job in 1980 (can you say re*ces*sion?) - Meanwhile, feeling the need for another meal or two( you'all know, I never passed many up.), I signed on with the International Union of Operating Engineers 3yr. Apprenticeship program. Started working full-time in heavy construction. - Deciding I needed more pressure in my life, I went back to Grad school (SDSU) '80-'82. - With the heavy work hours, I couldn't hang: dropped out with 24 units and half a thesis...(sound familiar ?) - Another period of job search, in the public sector. Nada, Zip, Zilch... Back to the world of dirt. - Worked in SD area as a Operating Engineer 1979-1994 - Divorced in '96 after 19 years of marriage. - Moved to Central Coast of CA - '95 - Still in Operators Union,(running cranes mostly) In and around Santa Barbara, Santa Maria, San Luis Opispo. The last few years steady work at Vandenberg Air Force Base, on the new ICBM launch pad for (Boeing Corp.'s) new Delta IV rocket. Also, most of 2004 remodling old underground launch silos for G.W.'s Ground-Based; Mid-Range Defense System (Star Wars Jr.) Both projects funded by your tax dollors (tha...Expand for more
nk you very much). Boeing Corp. the client on both projects. The missle defense silo's costruction was (and is) managed by Bechtel Corp.(by way of Raytheon) Living up on the Central Coast for over 20 years now. I met and married a wonderful lady and am happy as could be. - I'd like to get togeather with the old group of usual suspects circa 1968: D. Degen, M.Rauscher, M. McMullen, J. Crawford('friggin Canuck oughta' be able to sneak back in for a party), L. Plante, M. Kreger, J. Custeau, C. Millhouse, S. Young, D. Harbison(Monte Vista:'66) and some others, who I couldn't quite make out, waaay over there, on the other side of that smokey - er, foggy room.(McCormick, Weller, Schmidt, et. all) - AND sit around laughing at ourselves, as we realize we ARE the the old dudes (like our parents were) that we used to goof on.... Last 10 years Update (2017)..... I spent the last 12 years of my working years as a Heavy Equipment operator foreman and General Foreman for a few different contractors at Diablo Canyon Nuclear Power Plant. I retired in Sept of 2017. I may still return to Diablo Canyon to work a refueling outage or two. (hit a bunch of overtime then bail) .... I had a heart attack in 2016 and am really working on my health now.....I also had prostrate cancer surgery in 2013 - as well as radiation treatments.....The cancer had spread BEFORE surgery, so I am still dealing with it, As of November 2017, it appears my cancer is growing..Sooo, I am attempting to get into a clinical trial for a new method of radiation therapy at John's Hopkins Univ, in Baltimore...I'll update this post, if and when I get into the trail...and how it works for me. BTW.....I had a BLAST at out 50th reunion......It was so GREAT to see so many classmates! And I hope to be around for many more ....... Take Care Y'all. - 'Till Then - Party On!
