John's Story
After graduating high school I joined the Navy, receiving training as a Nuclear Weapons Technician. In a 24 year career I was stationed at various commands on both the east and west coast, visited 20 or so countries â many of them numerous times, and finally retired in 1999 as a technical inspector. During this time I obtained a BS and MSEd from Southern Illinois University.
While in the Navy I met my wife Bethany in San Diego, we married in 1990, and raised our daughter Jennifer. After retiring we ended up staying in Washington State as I took a job as a defense contractor working on Navy information technology systems. In 2001 I was hired into the U. S. civil service doing the same type of work. In 2009 I began specializing in computer security and I currently work as an information systems security analyst for the Department of the Navy. During my employment at Naval Undersea Warfare Center Keyport I have obtained a MPA from Indiana University and a Ph.D in Information Systems Security from Nova Southeastern University. Martin Corporation providing administrative support on Navy systems as well. Our daughter works in information security on a Navy Base in Kitsap County.
We are active in numerous community groups including the Port Orchard VFW, William H. Upton Naval & Military Masonic Lodge, Bremerton Navy League, and the Navy Nuclear Weapons Association. In our spare time Bethany likes doing yard work and having fun with our friends. We attend shows, concerts, comedy clubs, and regularly have parties with our friends. I enjoy micro-brews, good cigars, and single malt scotch. In my spare time I brew beer, cook, study history, and plan our next entertainment or travel adventure. I still play war-games with one of my friends. I generally listen to hard rock, classic rock, and blues - bands like Hawkwind, Grand Funk Railroad, Foghat, Govât Mule, and the Cult; however, we do enjoy classical music as well, particularly baroque.
All in all, life has been pretty good, our daughter is successful; we have good health, good friends, and still have a lot of fun together.
