One of John's favorite quotes is:""Carpei Diem..." ****************** "Yesterday is history, tomorrow's a mystery... today is a gift, and that's why we call it the present..." ****************** "The country is in deep trouble. We've forgotten that a rich life consists fundamentally of serving others, trying to leave the world a little better than you found it. We need the courage to question the powers that be, the courage to be impatient with evil and patient with people, the courage to fight for social justice. In many instances we will be stepping out on nothing, and just hoping to land on something. But that's the struggle. To live is to wrestle with despair, yet never to allow despair to have the last word." - Cornel West ****************** "Character cannot be developed in ease and quiet. Only through experience of trial and suffering can the soul be strengthened, vision cleared, ambition inspired, and success achieved." - Helen Keller ****************** "The big difference between people is not between the rich and the poor, the good and the evil. The biggest of all differences between people is between those who have had pleasure in love and those who haven't." - Paul Newman as Chance Wayne in "Sweet Bird of Youth" ****************** "Dance like nobody's watching; Love like you've never been hurt. Sing like nobody's listening; Live like it's heaven on earth." - Mark Twain ****************** "Start by doing what's necessary, then what's possible and suddenly you are doing the impossible." - St. Francis of Assisi ****************** "For I know well the plans I have in mind for you, says the LORD, plans for your welfare, not for woe! plans to give you a future full of hope." - Jeremiah 29:11 ****************** "So many people chase staying alive that they don't live." -Patrick Swayze, interview with Barbara Walters before his death, 9-14-2009 ****************** "Love is from where we come, it is how we must learn to live, and it is to where we return. And if anyone thinks I am a fool because I care, because I dare to love, because my friends mean more to me than a job or a paycheck, then I am the worst of fools…" -John Halloran, 10/18/2009 ****************** "This, rather, is the fasting that I wish: releasing those bound unjustly... Sharing your bread with the hungry... Clothing the naked when you see them..." - Isaiah 58:6-7 ****************** "And the Lord spake, saying, "First shalt thou take out the Holy Pin. Then shalt thou count to three, no more, no less. Three shall be the number thou shalt count, and the number of the counting shall be three. Four shalt thou not count, neither count thou two, excepting that thou then proceed to three. Five is right out. Once the number three, being the third number, be reached, then lobbest thou thy Holy Hand Grenade of Antioch towards thy foe, who, being naughty in my sight, shall snuff it." - Monty Python and the quest for the holy grail ****************** God has created me to do Him some definite service; He has committed some work to me, which He has not committed to another. I have my mission--I never may know it...Expand for more
in this life, but I shall be told it in the next. I am a link in a chain, a bond of connection between persons. He has not created me for naught. I shall do His work; I shall be an angel of peace, a preacher of truth in my own place - if I do but keep His commandments. Therefore I will trust Him. Whatever, wherever I am, I can never be thrown away. If I am in sickness, my sickness may serve Him; in perplexity, my perplexity may serve Him. He does nothing in vain. He knows what He is about. He may take away my friends; throw me among strangers. He may make me feel desolate, make my spirits sink, hide my future from me – still He knows what He is about. - St. Cardinal John Newman ****************** Clear eyes, full hearts, can't lose! Texas Forever! - Coach Eric Taylor, Billy Riggins-Friday Night Lights ****************** Steve Jobs Commencement speech to Stanford graduating class: “Your time is limited, so don’t waste it living someone else’s life. Don’t be trapped by dogma — which is living with the results of other people’s thinking. Don’t let the noise of others’ opinions drown out your own inner voice. And most important, have the courage to follow your heart and intuition. They somehow already know what you truly want to become. Everything else is secondary. “When I was young, there was an amazing publication called “The Whole Earth Catalog, “which was one of the bibles of my generation. It was created by a fellow named Stewart Brand not far from here in Menlo Park, and he brought it to life with his poetic touch. This was in the late 1960’s, before personal computers and desktop publishing, so it was all made with typewriters, scissors, and Polaroid cameras. It was sort of like Google in paperback form, 35 years before Google came along: it was idealistic, and overflowing with neat tools and great notions. “Stewart and his team put out several issues of The Whole Earth Catalog, and then when it had run its course, they put out a final issue. It was the mid-1970s, and I was your age. On the back cover of their final issue was a photograph of an early morning country road, the kind you might find yourself hitchhiking on if you were so adventurous. Beneath it were the words: “Stay Hungry. Stay Foolish.” It was their farewell message as they signed off. Stay Hungry. Stay Foolish. “And I have always wished that for myself. “And now, as you graduate to begin anew, I wish that for you. “Stay Hungry. Stay Foolish.” ****************** "we make a living by what we get, but we make a life by what we give". - Winston Churchill". More about John:"-Friendships are measured not by length but by depth... I live for life itself. I wonder at the awesome creation with which we have each been blessed. I firmly believe that I have a God who walks with me daily in my journey, and that we often forget about the tender mercy which is offered each and every moment of our lives. I have truly been blessed with great friends and an incredible family. I love to see the skies gray with the promise of rain, or bright blue with streaks of color as the sun's light reflects on the clouds in its rising and its setting. I have no idea why I know the people I do, or why I am surrounded by such unique, interesting and caring individuals. But I know that each meeting is an opportunity to share the gifts, the talents, and the Love with which God has blessed each of us. Some day, I will be permitted to look back on my life and see "The Plan." But while I am here, in its midst, I must grow each moment for Him who sent me. Each meeting, each moment, each connection is a gift, which I must not waste. I am not perfect, and I know that I make mistakes. But I have been forgiven through the miracle of the Cross, and I have been given Life through the redemption of the Resurrection. Email me, get to know me - I love to sit, drink a beer, and get to know you. Life's too short to miss the opportunity granted! Peace!".
