John's Story
The latest news, mid-Feb 2017:
Wrapping up a contract for a Federal agency. Looking at a couple of small gigs for two different places and a big job for a large company. Meanwhile, planning a huge revamp to my website and web presence to market my company's consulting services more. (We specialize in setting up and fine-tuning documentation departments of all sizes as well as helping companies through the software selection process.)
Been doing a TON of working out lately to combat the diabetes, to very good effect. Using a Lee Hayward 12-week program that has me pumping iron 4x/week and it's been terrific fun. Have lost maybe 12 pounds and have dropped 2 inches on my waist in the first 8 weeks. More to come, I'm sure. :)
My youngest granddaughter is 7 months old and is about to start crawling. She loves it when I play the guitar for her and she sings along. She apparently doesn't smile half as much for anyone else. I'm flattered. :)

Adding stuff in late July 2016.
It's now 27 books. May be 28 by this time next year.
Just got back from 2-1/2 weeks in Ireland and Scotland with 10 of Marilyn's sibs and spouses and couple of friends. I put on weight: full fry-up breakfasts are 2000-3000 calories. Wonderful, but at this point, it'll be a while before I can face sausages or bacon or eggs fried in 1/4" of bacon fat.
Been an incredibly busy year. We decided to move from Eugene, OR, to Fircrest, WA (next to Tacoma). We bought a beautiful house built in 1906 and spent 60K on repairs and remodeling and upgrades. We removed the original chimney before gravity or the next quake did it for us, upgraded the furnace and water heater and added a heat pump, and rewired pretty much everything. It was a mess but the house is a lot better for it.
We just had our 6th granddaughter: Leah My Ouanh Wahlberg. "My Ouanh" is Vietnamese for "nightingale," a beautiful middle name. Marilyn's son, Lars, and his wife, Vy, came over yesterday evening and we got to meet Leah (born July 16 while we were in Ireland) for the first time. She's a sweetie. (And 6 granddaughters and no grandsons! SCORE!!!!)
Not much else. Looking for my next writing or consulting contract at the moment. Goin...Expand for more
g to be traveling to Kansas City in a few weeks for the World Science Fiction Convention. Things aren't bad.
Life
(updated Feb, 2015): I'm an author and consultant. I've written 26 books at this point, which sounds pretty impressive and it's certainly fun. It doesn't pay as well as you might think, but I do get to work at home when I'm doing it. :) I'm heavily involved with the Society for Technical Communication (STC): I'm a Fellow of the Society. I've got more professional info than you'll want to see at my web site, which is dub dub dub dot hedtke dot comm. //I've been in the software biz for 35 years. I've been writing since the early 80s. I've done captive employment frequently, but I prefer freelance work because I can often work out of my spacious home office so I don't have to commute, wear clothes, or set alarm clocks. //I lived in Seattle from 1978-2002. I was married for 18 years (no kids), divorced for about 7 years, then married again on Sept 21, 2002 to a Federal administrative law judge with three kids. She got tapped for Federal service in 2001, so we moved to Ft. Wayne, IN, for two years. Indiana is the 7th Bolgia of Hell for those who don't know it. It makes Texas look pleasant and desirable by comparison. She got a promotion and a transfer and we were able to escape the Midwest and get back to the Left Coast. We now live in Eugene, OR, where I'd lived for a while in the mid-70s. It hasn't changed much since then, actually: the 70s are still alive in a lot of places here. We're very happy to be here and with each other. //Had adult onset diabetes in 1996. I control it with meds and diet. When not otherwise occupied, I play the banjo and sleep late as much as possible. We share our huge house with three cats.//Feel free to email me! (My email address and website are easy to find with any search engine.) Be persistent if you don't get an answer, as I've found that some emails get inappropriately filtered and I don't always catch them in the spam folder before I delete it.
I would love to keep in touch with people from my past. High school was great, but I also enjoyed a lot about my earlier school experiences, too. Feel free to drop me a line. :)
