John's Story

Update as at August 2018 Who would have ever thought that one day we would be saying "It's nearly fifty years...five decades! HALF A CENTURY!!, since since those great days in high school?? Here we are, and as youthful as we still feel, think, and act, we are all now in our mid to early 60's! We have all 'run our race'! Life is good. Every day(yes, EVERY day) I walk between four to six miles, along the pristine shores of the Indian Ocean, on my beloved Tarcoola Beach, which is virtually at my back door. And, every day, as the waters of the Indian Ocean caress my feet, and I watch the waves roll in, and listen to the soothing, almost hypnotic sounds of surf breaking, I continuously ask myself "where else in the world, John, where else in the world"? Yes, life is good!! I am still very, very hooked on American politics, and spend around three to four hours each day, on my laptop, looking at various U. S. political sites, as well as reading the multitude of U. S. political email alerts that I subscribe to. I would love to hear from anyone that remembers me from any of the schools that I went to! Below are my original comments, from when I first joined Classmates in around 2005. Life I was probably best known at South for debating; being politically active and outspoken(a real right wing fire brand, in those days!); and for leaving Eugene and moving to Perth, Australia with my parents. I'll try and jog some memories: In the Autumn of 1964, at Roosevelt Jr High, I was always plastered with red Goldwater-Miller/Goldwater '64 buttons. At South, in the Autumn of 1966, I always wore the huge black "Elect Dellenback To Congress" buttons. I was fairly chubby in school, but became a lean and mean 'fitness fanatic' in early adult hood, which included jogging and swimming, every day, on the idyllic West Australian beaches. In the 1980’s I also did daily aerobics and regular 25 to 40 mile bicycle rides. I just can't get enough of Mother Nature's beaches, and live for 'body surfing'; boogie boarding(I still have the very first model of Boogie Board ever made, which I bought in October 1980) ; and snorkeling, as well as beach jogging/walking. Where I live(Geraldton, Western Australia) just has to have the world's best climate, and the world's best beaches! I've always been very 'committed to the cause', be it my work, or politics, and was never really concerned about marrying or finding a partner, although it has been nice 'brightening a life', occasionally, for short periods of time. As for a career, I did 'bits and pieces'(including owning two small businesses), for about three y...Expand for more
ears after high school, before having eight years as a Real Estate Broker, after which I was a Financial Planner for fourteen years. Since 1994 I have been a Stockbroker, in the lobster fishing town of Geraldton(about 250 miles North of Perth, Western Australia<climatically about the same as living 250 miles South of San Diego>), where I oversee the local operations of a major national Stockbroking firm. In my younger years I did achieve a level of prominence, on the West Australian political scene, before deciding to focus on $$$ earning career opportunities. I am still a political 'junkie', and very active in local politics. Professionally, I have any number of stockbroking accreditations, mostly courtesy of Australia's ultra-strict regulatory system. Scholastically, I earned a Professional Diploma in Stockbroking, through an Australian university, while in the mid/late 1970's(after some years of part time study, while real estate broking) I achieved a tertiary qualification in Real Estate Management. Politically, shortly after arriving in Australia, I became active in the Australian equivalent of the GOP, and very quickly rose through the ranks of the party organization/structure, and soon held many senior positions in the party organization, both at local and state level. In 1974 I ran for my party's nomination for a seat in Australia's equivalent of the State Legislature. Although I was the almost unanimous choice of the local party activists, some of the establishment power brokers had other ideas, and found a local former pro football star(who had never had any previous political involvement!) to run against me. After an epic, hard fought race, I ended up losing an absolute cliff hanger by the narrowest of margins(I am pretty confident you'd call losing by one vote a cliff hanger, and narrow margin!!). The main lesson I learned from that race, was that if I ever I was going to hold public office, I needed to first achieve an improved level of financial security. To that end, in 1976 I relinquished the offices I held within the party organization, so that I could focus more fully on career endeavors, although I did remain somewhat active. Once I moved to Geraldton(in 1994), and settled into my stockbroking career, I became much more active, and again started to hold positions within the party structure. I often wonder what might have been, had my family not moved to Australia! And, the names of classmates, in particular from South Eugene; Roosevelt Junior High; and Coburg Elementary often run through my mind, and I wonder how they all fared on life's journey!
