John's Story

Life After years of riding on the wrong side of the road, I finally found my way to truly understanding what being a Christian is. I'm not gonna toss a bible at you. But if you want to understand where I'm coming from, feel free to send me a note. I would love to hear from you. Until then, here's a little on my life. I went from Northport High School to SUNY at New Paltz, where I majored in Philosophy. After spending several years trying to "find myself", I dropped out for a semester to dig clams (in February) while taking a couple classes at SUNY Stony Brook. Well, that was something of a God experience. There is nothing like being out on the open water in a 13 foot boat, temps in the teens at times, while watching swans, egrets and herons as you struggle to make a buck. It got me back into school to finish off the degree. Philosophy. Who'd figure it? Well, I was gonna sit out on Mount Mohonk (outside of New Paltz) and wait for someone to ask me the meaning of life. But I had a rather rude awakening. I needed to eat - and you can't eat sitting on a mountain. From there, I went to A&S Department Stores, working aas a programmer in Brooklyn, NY. I rented an apartment in Brooklyn and met my wife on the Long Island Railroad when I was headed home for the weekend. I went to work for Four-Phase Systems as a Systems Engineer in NYC. After a year with them, I transferred to company headquarters in California and spent the next 3 1/2 years working in a National Technical Support role. That lasted until they decided to move the department to Dallas, TX. Not wanting to put on cowboy boots and a ten gallon hat, I got transferred back to the east coast. By that time my wife, Maureen, had given birth to a healthy, happy red-headed boy, and was pregnant with our daughter. So we moved to the Washington, DC area. Motorola bought Four-Phase, and I moved on to work for a more stable company after Motorola laid off all but about 8 people in my 150 person office. Where was that? Why, IBM, of course. A nice stable company in 1988, that imploded around me. But while that was going on around me I was covering the Mid-Atlantic states, started an Internet, and got to travel all across the country, and Paris, France. I even got a letter of thanks from the late Florida Governor Lawton Chiles. I live now in Gaithersburg, Mar...Expand for more
yland with my wife and four children - working for Computer Sciences Corporation on a large US government contract. My kids are great. My life is better overall than it has been in years. Sure, I have my ups and downs, but over the long haul, things have been surprisingly steady. In August, 2004 I started a men's ministry singing four part a cappella harmony. We started with two - kind of hard to do four part harmony that way. But the next week we had four. We now are up to about a dozen men, and we've been ministering around the area at nursing homes and hospitals. But we also have a heart for working with the US military. Who could need the Lord more than those who go into harm's way on our behalf? We try to perform at some facility around the Washington, DC area once a month. All of it has bee gratis. And during Christmas season, we tend to perform 4 or 5 places. On September 11, 2007, we reached what is our worldly peak of success - opening for the NewsBoys at the Pentagon September 11 Memorial Service. We have a location to be seen at amfm-bbs. This is on MSN's new spaces live site. I'm sure you can find us if you look. Our members have included unemployed father whose wife walked out on him, a Navy enlisted man (now off in Japan on a two year tour), two computer geeks, a mortgage loan officer, a Miracle-ear salesman, a retired Army major. These men are from Asia, Africa, South America and the USA. You can check us out on amfm-bbs.spaces.live.com. I am looking forward to growing the group to about a dozen men, and using it as an opportunity for spreading the Gospel in song. This is a new venture for me. We don't charge for what we do. But we hope to raise the money to take these men on the road. This is a longer process than I would like. But, ya know, you can't rush God. He does things just as He likes. I have also take to arranging music. I hope that we can get our guys to start to sing it soon. But until then, I'm working hard to get us all singing well. The stuff we're working with is by recognized arrangers. I will continue with that for now. Well, that kind of wraps things up. Try my cell. The area code in Montgomery County, Maryland is 301. My own number is five-o-nine ten eighty-nine. You can try non-snail (ie - E) mail at my firstname underscore lastname at hot no space mail dotcom.
