John's Story

I attended Sac State after high school, earned a BA in physical sciences and became a elementary teacher locally. In '78 I took a break from teaching and moved to Portland, OR to attend Western States Chiropractic College. 1981 was a good year--my wife Barbara and I had our first (and only) child, I graduated from WSCC and set up a practice in southeast Portland. Two years later we moved back to Sacramento to care for ailing parents and while waiting to take CA state boards took up substitute teaching. Well, that led to an offer of a primo teaching position which I accepted and for six years I had two careers, one in teaching, another in health care. I gave up the chiropractic practice to focus on teaching in 1990, and retired from Sac City Unified in 2001 after 26 years as a teacher. Barbara was diagnosed with cancer in 1996 and died a year later. I have not remarried. Currently my daughter lives in Austin, TX with her husband and two boys whom I adore. I have traveled some. In 1997 I helped set up a health clinic in a rural area near Assisi, Italy. In 2004 I was diagnosed with lymphoma and, as part of a treatment program, spent some time at a clinic in Abadiania, Brazil. This year marks the fifth year in remission, which is an impo...Expand for more

In 2003 a friend and I enjoyed a memorable trip to British Columbia by motorcycle, traveling by way of the coastal route. Ah, the things one sees and experiences traveling by motorcycle are unknown to those who travel by car--not for the faint of heart. I also have recently begun roasting coffee and am a local source of high-quality, freshly-roasted whole coffee beans. Not a commercial venture, this is a means by which I stay connected with old friends and meet new ones. They keep coming back for more... Last summer I visited a former childhood friend, Phil Rifner, who now lives on Camano Island, WA. I had not seen him since 1957, except for a very brief visit when he was on leave from a stint in the military. What a joy it is to reconnect with a friend after so long. Currently I live in a little spiritually-based community in Rancho Cordova, CA. I get to visit with my grandsons, my siblings are still alive, I am in good health, and retirement allows time to pursue hobbies and reconnect with old friends. All in all, it has been a good life...
