John (Jack)'s Story

After graduating, which was still a surprise to my parents :>), Rod Yeakel and I joined the Coast Guard. We both were assigned to a large ship (cutter), the BARATARIA out of Portland, ME. We had an apartment that was the bachelor pad of the 60's it seemed...The ship went to Vietnam in early 1968, I left for a school in Groton, CT in Nov 1967, so missed it. Upon grad I went to Boston, MA and seems I spent more time partying in an even better pad in downtown Kenmore Square and going to the Impossible Dream Red Sox games then working....Met my wife there & were married in Jan 1968 & immediately shipped off to Cape Cod, MA to another ship, the HORNBEAM for about the full year, where we had our first child, Kristen. The Coast Guard liked me so much they shipped me off again in Dec to the Recruiting Office in Manchester, NH. During that time had no problems recruiting young men into the Coast Guard as they all wanted to beat the draft, unknowing that they still could end up in Vietnam with the Guard, but being the top service to get into (mental exam & background stuff most failed and had to be redirected down the hall to the other services). Promoted to E-6 and shipped off to my fourth independent duty (without supervision, just know it and do it type), at Group St. Petersburg, FL in Dec 1970. A year later our son Scott was born and has been forever cold outside of Florida wx. Requested to be assigned as an instructor at my specialty school out in Petaluma, CA and was shipped off again in Nov 1973. Ended up teaching the first group of female students on active duty since WWII in the Coast Guard (small service & very selective back then and really couldn't accomodate them), in early 1974. That truly was an experience with the changes, etc., etc. Made Chief Petty Officer in Jan 1976 and was promoted to School Chief in charge of all the other instructors, the curriculum and of course the 150 or so students. Later in '76 they asked me if I wanted to see Hawaii, so yeah, why not, shipped off again to Honolulu to a ship, the Cutter JARVIS, the largest class in the Coast Guard at the time, where I was in charge of the Administrative & Personnel Office, albiet, only 5 guys. Spent more time on fishery patrols & Law Enforcement in the Bering Sea of Alaska then in Hawaii inport. Ever watch DEADLIEST CATCH on Discovery Channel? Well this type ship along with the Helicopter we carried with us, were out there rescuing those guys along with the myraid of other fishing boats from Russia, Japan, Korea, etc., that they don't show, plus boarding all of them to check on their catches along with possible contraband and other illegal stuff. After two years basically underway at 2-3 months at a time, in our homeport of Honolulu for 2-3 weeks, then out again (the wife and kids loved it however, they never had to go off to Alaska), we were transferred to the Eleventh District Office in Long Beach, CA. In charge of the Administrative and Reserve Office of a staff of 15 where I was promoted to Senior Chief Petty Officer and Chief Warrant Officer on the same day so had to decide which, which also would have another transfer attahced to it if I elected to become an officer and gentlemen, which I did. Off to Governor's Island, NY, kinda like Staten Island, except it was all Coast Guard personnel and their families after they assumed duties of the island from the Army a bit before. So off we went to the East Coast, finally, closer to home, but to the bad wx after stints in Florida, California twice (northern & southern), Hawaii. So in July 1979 I was in charge of over 1000 housing units for officer and enlisted families on Governor's Island and Staten Island, with duties and responsibilities too numerous to list. Let's just say, they didn't allow the Housing Officer (my billet) to remain in that position more than 2 years. So in 1981 it was off to another duty station, this time at the Coast Guard Academy in New London, CT, again as the Housing Officer, and again with a myraid of duties and responsibilities where we bought our final house (had a couple others along the way, with most times being in what is call Government Housing, not owned by us, but leased to us for a set amount of $$. Retired in Nov 1985, still as an officer and gentlemen, surprisingly.....During all the above, was very active in forming various sports teams for the men and women assigned with me to the various units, always managing/coaching and playing on all (basketball, flag football, baseball, softball), winning many championships along the way, with a lot of playoffs and tournaments and even a couple all-star stints, luckily. After being so active, basically retired from that also and concentrated mostly on the kids and grandkids sports since, plus a darn herniated disc that developed almost immediately after I retired from military precluded alot of that type physical activity. Boy this is getting long and only halfway....bet no one else wrote a story this long huh? Well, you asked for it.....After retirement, not really planning what the heck I really wanted to do or was qualified to do after alot of prestigious jobs and leaving on a bad note due to a couple senior officers that should've been drummed out of the service years before. Anyway, took a job as a Loan Officer of a new Bank Mortgage Company at a time when everyone was refinancing their homes and properties. Did that fairly successfully for a year, then took an interview with CNA insurance in Farmington, CT (near Hartford) for a General Services Supervisor position that was alot more (about twice actually), what I was paid the last year in service. Not knowing anything at all about how a big Insurance office operated, the big guy hired me due to my supervising experience and potential to learn the business I guess. I was in charge of the Building Maintenance Dept, Accountng, Supply, Mail & Shipping, Records Maintenance, Communications and one other that slips my memory, but with 7 supervisors that were accountable to me with their 150 employees, it was no small task. Unfortunately, the person that hired me left to another company and was replaced by a young lady who didn't like my military supervisory techniques, and the combined travel time daily spelled the end after a year. Took off for about six months and took a real estate course and then a job at a new real estate office that specialized in commercial real estate and management rather then the other stuff. While there I found my dream, a Sports Card and Memorabillia store (I had continued collecting everything and I do mean everything, while in the service, in fact had to pay extra sometimes for the service to ship my personal effects cause it was just so much and heavy). Anyway, the guy was moving to Florida, so I offered to buy, etc., and here I became a Small Business Owner of what many customers called the largest of it's kind on the East Coast (doubtful, but it always sounded nice). Opened that in March of 1988 and closed the doors in March 2002. Great years from 1988 to about 1996, but strugged from then on due to the massive quantities of stuff put out there to buy, just could't keep buying and taking all the chances, so finally gave up my dream job and have been unloading inventory online (ebay) since. That takes us up to 2009 as far as work. Both daughter Kristen and son Scott still live in the area, Scott about 5 minutes away, not yet married (according to a survey they did of all the males who graduated with him in 1988 I think, over 70% are still not married. So not holding much hope there, though the girls love him and he does take after the old man, just won't settle down. Kristen is about 20 minuties away so both still kinda under our thumb, yeah, right! She did give us two GREAT, of course, grandchildren so we see them just about whenever we want, sometimes more than we want, as we kinda are like their second parents being so darn close, sometimes I feel I missed being a grandfather and just continued the father bit no matter how hard I try not to and they both feel it too sometimes, but they are really great, the girl, Jessica is now 15 going on 25 and is and has been the brainy high honors type student, heck since pre-school where her teacher would rely on her to help the others, and that has continued into the 6th, now 10th grade. She's a motherly hen type, very carrying, etc., also a high school cheerleader & cheer/dance competitions, not an athlete, though that stuff is now considered athletic, had injuries to her wrists, arm, ankles a couple times each along with a pretty severe concussion in 2010, but loves cheering and helps teaching the younger cheerleaders on the youth teams. The little boy, Jacob (Jake) is 11 and yeah, I know, all of our kids and grandkids are all star this and all star that and as George Carlin said, no one gives a rat llll about your kids or grandkids, sometimes not even the relatives, so......, but anyway, he is an athlete, literally the star on everyone of his Soccer teams since 4 1/2 when allowed, his T-Ball team, then his Little League Team Minors and now his Major League Team where he was the first draft pick going from one league to the next both times and was one of only 6 nine year olds brought up to play with the 9-12 year olds, but had his troubles this year facing those older 12 & sometimes 13 year old pitchers, in fact got hit by the oldest, best, and fastest pitcher in the league and had the imprint of the baseball on his upper arm for a week. He was also the quarterback on his flag football team, decided not to go out last two years due to soccer, but played last year when he was 8, Fullback and Linebacker. Of course his BeBe (me) is his personal instructor (found my niche), but even though it seems most times he hates listening to me and doesn't seem to be paying attention, he certainly does retain something. OK, enough bragging, but th...Expand for more
at's what's also fun about being a grandparent. Oh yeah, both regular kids were good in various sports throughout their competitive days and son still plays some basketball and softball, but daughter is wayyyyy too busy being the "soccer mom" from one place to the other with both. Guess I covered everything and still have almost 10,000 characters remaining, WOW!!! Left out most of the personal stuff I guess, those who really want the R or X version can get back to me I guess. Everyone should try this, it's good brain exercise trying to remember. I just did this tonight and just typed away as it came to me in little over an hour and half or so. Fun....probably have to pay to see it or to post it too.....Take care all interested parties, and no, I don't love myself, just thought it would be fun trying to remember everyting (at our ages now, it really is good excercise. UPDATE: Date: Wednesday, May 11, 2011, 6:36 PM Thought I should send this to all of you, some I owe replies to from other emails, been real bad about that, you others know, when I do send a reply it can get quite lengthy and informative, so mostly waiting for right time, but am sorry that I haven't replied yet. Some others of you, haven't heard back in a few years, so you might not care anyway, but I am going in for quad artery heart surgery at 0630, tomorrow, 12 May. Should be in till 18th or so, then home for light duty, real light duty. Jim and a couple you others know what this is all about. Had a heart cath done in 2000 because I started getting more pain in my chest and along both arms, more than I had been experiencing due to a couple degenerated discs in my neck, so told my docter I wanted to see a heart specialist, just in case, as with the pain from my discs I would never know if having signs of heart problems. They did the cath and found a fully blocked artery in the back of the heart, which others arteries compensated for so they basically just monitored it every year with stress tests and ekg's, always normal so continued living the life of riley. A month ago started getting pain in the chest, both arms and trouble breathing, just about daily, whether working in the yard or just watching TV, lasted usually 5-10 minutes, subsided then I would resume working. Did it most every day, but had an appointment coming up with the heart specialist so figured I'd wait, since I had just started the spring cleanups outside, after lounging around for 5 months and literally gaining almost 40 pounds worth of cookies, candy, cheese, etc., taking care of my TV and doing almost nothing else. Was 198 November 1st and everytime I weighed over 225 I was setting new records, but the sweets were just too good to pass up at 4 am, dumb........So they sent me in for another heart cath, figured 11 years was worth a look, and found a total of 4 blockages, just the one full, but the others enough to give me the symptoms and warrant this thing rather than stints, etc. The guy doing it is outstanding in his field, yes I checked his references and all gave him an A+. didn't mean this to get so long winded, but thought some of you at least would like to know and you others, whatever, it is what it is,right? Take care, talk to you soon I'm back! Me and Arnold without the paternity problems. I owe some of you that took interest with specific questions a personal reply soon, but for now the general populace I choose to send at least know I'm still around for awhile, thanks for your prayers and concerns. If you don't want to hear some of the specifics and embarassments, turn off now otherwise you'll get to know a Quad Replacement surgery maybe a little more than you want and I'll be forever embarassed whenever I see you again. Went in at 6:30 am, 12 May, after saying see ya later to Elaine and daughter Kristen and my barbs at the other nurses and doctors in attendance, they finally quieted me down and am sure somewhere shortly thereafter slipped the old breathing tube down my throat gently with love and concern, like you see it done on ER or Grey's Anatomy........Anyway, told me I would be done the progressive way, in-body experience, open chest, beating heart still with me, but they must've run into something that prevented that and left me just laying there, alone attached to a machine that kept the rest of me going as they worked on my heart on a separate table. They ended up taking a long artery out of my left leg, with three snips low and one in my groin, that right now is about 3 x 3 feet of black, blue, orange, and some quezzy looking Coast Guard cream. That's where the long vein was yanked and pulled from the lower leg like Elaine's spaghetti, but much redder and longer I presume. Another vein was taken from the chest area and the two were snipped to lengths needed for the bypasses. Whew, got you sick yet?? Any that know me real well know my passion is Horror movies, just not really mine. Eventually the procedure was over. Estimated by my expert doctor to be 4 - 4 1/2 hours under took 7 1/2 hours. Thank goodness the computer print out sheet for ops room reservations was for 6 1/2 hours, so only had to pay a few bucks for extension........Also glad they brought enough oxygen and the old sleeping gas to last that extra hour. Must say, don't remember waking up asking for more or drifing over my body to my heart so none of those experiences, sorry. Into to recovery room, which I stayed in for two days. Nurse #1 was just so nice, held my hand continuously while they gently pulled the breathing tube out..... what a pain, awake but drifting and these calming voices all around encouraging while you choke, not sure if anything like giving birth, but kinda know how you girls just wanna swear at those calming voices, but with the tube, impossible. Went down to the next floor late Friday, when they started pumping me with meds, if I could remember one of them I could be a millionaire, had me loopy, real loopy for 16 hours. Anyway, they also give you all the bowel pills to get you going as if that is something you can't wait to do, and some urinary pills that take all dignity out of you and leaves you in the arms of the lovely nurses, cleaning up the floors, changing your bed, your nightgown and putting a big diaper on you alot earlier than any of us ever envisioned it was going on, at least they didn't attach it. Literally, that happened no less than 20 times to my recollection during my stay, it got so bad that even when I thought I had it licked, I would fail to take the top off the urinary bottle, or just when you think you got that little thing in it really isn't and you missed all but the floor, finally got it together the last two days and became a grown man again, but wife was still hestitant bringing home the new puppy, with new sofa and new hardwood floor. Of course you average less than 4 hours of sleep per day as they wake you on all shift changes to introduce themselves, "Hi, I'm Jerri Ann, great, or Hi I'm Mona (that one made me sit up and check for tatoos, but Hi, I'm Larry, that really made me sit up and take notice. But really at 2:00 am, was that necessary, just prop my head up throw down the meds and wait for my call button for the changing. Honestly, Yale New Haven Hospital is one of the best in the nation and all staff I had were exceptional, nice, took my one-liners pretty well, except Larry??.....A full length mirror gives me the realization that Frankenstein had nothing on me. Been home since Tuesday. 17th, just as predicted, despite Elaine's arguments.....got a great live-in nurse (Elaine) as I've been her's for 4 or so major stuff, and this is my only one, so am milking it for what I can get. Can't drive for a month minimum and yes the pain in certain areas is bad but sometimes you don't believe you ever had anything, till you try something the doctor said no to. Says I'll me a new man, well as long as I still take my meds for my two degenerated discs in my neck, my reflux, my hypothyroid, the type 2 diabetes (so you see girls, not necessary the catch you might've thought......anyway, all that is preventable and treatable, still two greatkids and two great grandchildren And of course you friends, on my short list. Take care all! UPDATE UPDATE: Now 3 months later and doing great, got a kitten to drive me nuts, but well worth it, best friends, even take him for walks. Still waiting for that new man to show up. Keep missing him at the door I think. 12 Dec 2013 Well been a couple years since I entered anything on here. Not too much has happened compared to the first couple entries. Had a Lipthroposy (removal of a large Kidney Stone through a cut in the kidneys at Yale New Haven Hospital about a year ago. That was a complete FU, though hilarious as we look back at all the crap went through, only in my family......Got $20,000 worth of teeth implants this year, what a process, thanks to all that gum chewing from baseball cards growing up and not flossing I guess, like a dame house mortgage. Grandaughter is graduating high school next spring, grandson going into high school next fall. Daughter is great, living her 2nd teenage years it seems, in a good place, seeing alot of old friends. Son might finally be finding a girl to settle down with. Wife is fine. Cymba, my princely cat is 32 months and still plays like a kitten and thinks he's a dog (swear, so do we). Well, bad news, i was attacked on 13 October 2018, beaten down, assaulted and am now a Tetrapalegic mostly a veggie but with movement in my head (though spine was broken and put together with a rod), my arms and shoulders and can feel feet n legs but not much movement n not able to stand! Been in various hospitals since then getting 24/7 care n a little Rehab! Due to insurance coverage due to go home March for remainder!
