John's Story

I remember a good many of you fellow students but I doubt that you remember me. I did not participate in much of anything and was shy and withdrawn in those years. In Junior and Senior years I was in Distributive Education so I was dismissed about 1:30 to go to work which was what that program was all about. With the Vietnam War going on I started college about a week after graduation during the summer of 67 in order to get some college education before the draft hit me. I completed two years of study at Miami Jacobs Junior College of Business In Dayton Ohio going round the calendar to avoid losing my "student status". I completed my course of study in Accounting and Business Administration in approximately 14 months. After completion of that I had to register at the draft to update my status and within two weeks was drafted so I enlisted in the United States Air Force I took my basic training at Amarillo Air Force Base in Texas and my "Flight" was one of the last ten to go through Amarillo. We had to stay extra time to help shut that base down as they decided to run all Air Force Basic through Lack land. After completing the shut down I was stationed at Colorado Springs for schooling and then my first assignment here at Sault Ste. Marie Michigan which is where I met my wife (Jan) of 42 years. (My base of request was Florida and got sent way up here, ha). This base after a short time was scheduled for closure thus my career seemed to be destined to close things down! From here I was assigned to a combat support group on the border of Vietnam at UtapoThailand on the Gulf of Siam. Completing that assignment I was honorably discharged on an early out and began to suffer the effects of agent orange. I managed to work in the Finance field for 20 years or so and then was forced to ...Expand for more
retire on disability. I worked in the private sector for the Chippewa County Road Commission and then for Edison Sault Electric Company. Prior to that after discharge and marriage (wife and I lived in Springfield for little over two years) I worked at International Harvester swinging from the body plant to the Final Assembly on Route 68. I lived in Florida for approximately 8 years in order to get VA Health Care as we had none here this far North at that time. My wife stayed here to maintain our home and continue her career. We have one son who is a terrific son and Dad. He is a 6 year Navy Veteran and a corrections officer with the Michigan Department of Corrections. Also, one beautiful granddaughter who has been an honor student throughout her schooling thus far (now a Junior) ! Ummmmmmmmmm, guess I am at that point! I lived to get old which is a lot to be thankful for with so many or our classmates who fell during the War and others who have passed. I continue to battle agent orange cancer, heart, spinal problems but always remember that I am fortunate and there are always those in worse conditions. My only regret is that I did not participate more in High School and got to know more of my classmates. You can't go back - only keep moving forward! I wish you all the best and if you remember me say hello and if not that is fine. I wish you all length of life and happiness , prosperity and peace! Sincerely, John Jobes and Family P.S. i HAVE MY ORIGINAL 1967 YEAR BOOK THE POLARIS WHICH HAS BEEN ALL OVER THE COUNTRY AND IS LIKE NEW OTHER THEN SOME OF THE PAGES GETTING YELLOW FROM AGE ALONG THE EDGE.
