Dr. John's Story
Life after West High
My communication-social skills were lacking during my years at West High. But that changed drastically as I have journeyed through life. My life's path has been one of a scholarly endeavor, whereby I was first a student , then a college professor, and last, an economic researcher.
I entered Colorado State University during the Fall of 1962. During my sophomore year, I was hired by an agricultural economic unit of the USDA. I wondered why they were interested in a "city boy," but I soon found out that they were interested in my mathematical background as a skill for doing empirical studies in estimating crop production. I did this work for a number of years.
In 1967, I received my B.S. degree, and met my true love - Mary, but it did not last. In 1974, I received an M.S. degree in Economics from Colorado State, where I published two articles based on my thesis in peer-reviewed professional journals including the J. of Business and Kyklos. Subsequently, I entered a Ph.D. program in Economics at the U. of Nebraska, where I gained my first experience teaching sophomore Economics in the...Expand for more
College of Business. On my first teaching day, I recall, how intimidating it was, when I realized that I had a number of football players in my class from the Cornhusker football team.
After completing the Ph.D. in 1981, I accepted a position of Assistant Professor at the U. of Missouri - Rolla and then at Nichols State in Louisiana, where I taught micro, macro and managerial economics, plus industrial organization. After a number of years, my desire to teach waned, and I decided my real interests were in economic research. I moved to Atlanta, taught part-time, and studied graduate business finance at Georgia State. In 1992, I obtained a GS-13 position with the U.S. Department of Treasury in Atlanta Georgia, where, as an Industry and Financial Economist, I dealt with economic issues arising from large corporation international transfer pricing policies, and valuation of banks, non-competition agreements, and businesses such as limited partnerships, and LLCs. This work involved interacting with accountants and attorneys. As a result of my work, I published several articles in the peer-reviewed Business Valuation Review.
I am currently living in Atlanta Georgia.
