John's Story

Life Never take the direct path in life (Life since 1986 in 4000 characters or less). After High School there were numerous colleges attended, classes cut, nastygrams from college authorities, embarrassing questions from parents, nastier letters from colleges, menial jobs, more college and eventually a graduation. I graduated Manhattan College in 1996 and started work as an accountant. You math genuises out there will realize that is 10 years after high school graduation. Thank-you Captains Obvious! Accounting was at best, a "bad" career choice. This led to a brief episode of "job hopping" (numerous "character building" and embarassing experiences) followed eventually by my crash landing in a software company (hey I had a pulse, they needed bodies. What a match!). Neat job, miserable pay, big learning experience. I left that job to go to work for my current employer, SS&C Technology. They have of all things made the mistake of trusting me with some authority and letting me make some decisions. Those of you who play the market know this is your cue to sell short. It is a decent job where I work with good folks and I do something a bit random which suits my personality. We have just been taken over by the Carlyle Group (Michael Moore will tell you they are part of the vast right-wing conspiracy. Those of you who know me will realize I am right where I belong!). I have thus far been able to avoid many long term family entanglements and have no kids. Hopefully somewhare down the road. My only dependants right now are the 15 denizens of the fish tank in my living room. They are lousy for conversation but, are very relaxing to look at when I get home. I can be found most week days on the NY Autobahn (I-684) commuting between ...Expand for more
Carmel and, Armonk where the office is. If I am working on an implementation, I may be anywhere in the continental US. I have been able to visit some amazing places, and have had some interesting adventures while working including Wisconsin (for an entire summer, the cheddar in the fields during the summer grow and ripen so fast. What a sight!), Yosemite National Park (humbeling an awe inspiring place everyone should get there), Alabama (before the hurricaine, Southern hospitality IS as good as they say), Georgia (where I was told for someone north of Chatanooga I wasn't a bad person, thank God I left the Yankee hat at home) Detroit where I was marooned in the Detroit airport (something not to ever repeat). During the weekends, I usually get together with some friends. Other times, depending on the season you may find me along the shore of a reservior fishing, at the range shooting, reading or, attempting to play really bad music with some friends. In January, I am going to Pace to continue work on my MBA. With a few exceptions I have lived in the area since high school. There was a brief stint in Long Island and, Larchmont but when coming North to visit the old folks in Mahopac, the area and the feel of it just said "Home" to me. I now live in a condo in Carmel. Most Thursdays, I go to Norms in Brewster for a beer or 3, and some dinner. Stop by sometime. So ten years after high I can look back and say it has been interesting. I am sure I could have taken a much more direct path through life to get where I am now but, I would not appreciate it as much as I do now. Not to mention, I would have missed those fields of cheddar in Wisconsin (avoid the green ones, they are not ripe!). JK September 2005
