John's Story
I played trumpet in the band, bugel calls at the football games, and "Fearless Frankel" at the senior show.
After HS, there was Queens College (where I met more HS friends); graduated with degree in Geology and worked first doing oceanography, then micropaleontology, sedimentology, marine seismology, then computer data processing: this was at Lamont Geological observatory (Columbia U).
Moved to Dallas Tx and worked for Mobil Oil (geophysics), then Xerox (programming and testing of computers); moved to Rochester, NY where I spent 16yrs designing, building and testing high-volume printing systems.
Currently in NYC at Corporate Legal Services, doing IT.
Two of the most "fun" things I have done since HS were a) riding horses, and b) Toastmasters.
Actually, I should add a third - working at LDGO was a great experience where I was able to meet and work with the best marine scientists in the world (at that time), and rub elbows with future greats (e.g. Walter Alvarez - he and his Lauriet father came up with the theory of meteor extinction of dinosaurs). See what I mean? My interests in geology never faded; a few years ago I was attending NYSGA field trips in upstate NY - brought...Expand for more
back some memories of visiting sites when in college (FYI: Upstate NY is the first place that the geology of North America was first described - we should pay hommage). I have to sort through all my photos when I get settled again.
Horses - a latent interest of mine; harkens back to the days of yesteryear when we saw the flash of a white steed, with a cloud of dust, a burst of speed and a hearty "Hi-o..." Yes I guess I had a facination with the whole genre, but riding can be fun and a challenge. How do you tell a 1200 lb beast to do something that they do not understand - when you do not know their language? Its almost like dogs and cats - except you cant fall off a dog or cat and take a nose dive into the ground or (like has happened to me) have the horse fall on you - such fun! Actually, some of the most fun moments were when Comet and I were doing an open class at a horse show (Comet was an over-the-hill pokey champion) and he took a blue ribbon against all the privately owned, highly pampered horses (and their ridrs) - made me proud of him. It was also a great lesson in how real champs are never chumps - they always seem to have something left in them when they have fun.
