John's Story

Once upon a time, long ago, in a galaxy far, far away was the planet neshaminy langhorne. There I discovered many friends and a few good friends, much like today. The many friends passed into the mists of time but when I look thru the yearbook I still remember them; the good people, the kind people, the ones I looked forward to seeing every day. The good friends I still remember their names even after all this time and I have to admit it amazes me sometimes. So, what have I done since then? I don’t know how true it is that a person’s job defines them, but if it does then I would be a jack of all trades. Right after I got my diploma, that summer I began working for Pomeroy’s department store in the Levittown shopping center as a stock boy and I stayed there til December or thereabouts when I applied to US Steel and landed a job at the powerhouse there; I cleaned a lot of boilers and eventually got promoted to pump tender auxiliary and of my 2.5 years there I spent the last year driving thru the mill with a radio waiting for calls to start or stop or clean one of the huge air compressors. But, I did have a lot of time to read when I wasn’t being called and once I read a book that was so badly written I just knew I could do better and decided I should go to college to learn to be a better writer. Now you might realize that was a mistake but I didn’t know this at the time – a writer learns to be a better writer simply by writing but I went whole hog at it and was accepted at University of Arizona in Tucson where I studied for 1.5 years (when I ran out of money) and met some really good friends there including one young man named John Ebinger who played the bass guitar, and incidentally now plays double bass for the Phoenix philharmonic. Tucson was great, I used to drive an enduro motorcycle out into the desert for miles and miles and the desert is one beautiful place – from the center of Tucson you can be in the desert within 10 minutes and once met a prospector who told me about caves not on any map and even showed me how to get there. It’s a strange thing to walk into a cave not too many people know about and the one I explored had a room the size of a football field – and yes I got lost a few times ;) Anyways I had to work to make money to hopefully go back to school however work was not too easy to find, I worked at many jobs, three places as cooks, one place making bricks, oh and once as a salesman – we had to compete to be the leader and I ran from house to house to get the most leads. Anyway one day I was working at a restaurant and got a call from a lady I knew. I had left my pregnant cat with her and she had called to let me know the cat had given birth. I left work with a little excitement, curious to see the kittens as i drove down Miracle Mile. That was a fateful drive and it might have been better if I had paid more attention to that name. As I was driving a large truck made a left h...Expand for more
and turn in front of me… and the next thing I knew it was weeks later and I was in the hospital some time after waking up from a week long coma. I had a pulverized elbow, fractured hip and ankle and massive head trauma. My parents flew me back to Moss Rehab in Philly and I pretty much lived there for 9 months. This all happened in 1981. The hospital had to take me thru kindergarten again, or for the first time considering I never went before. They had to teach me to walk and talk and eat again. I am sure not too many people held much hope for me during those days but you know its amazing what you can learn from the worst of times. One thing I live by these days: nothing you have is really yours, its a gift on loan and you are only able to have it for a short time so everything you have, your sight, your mind, arms, legs, hands, feet, in short Everything is something to be treasured and to do less is to spit on if it as not that important. I didn't get that insight all at once but the following year I got epilepsy as a result of the head trauma and the doctors were not able to control it so for the next ten years I lived overdosed of epilepsy meds and during that time I got married for all of a year and a half and during that time I was blessed with a daughter. The medication I was on did not make for a good married life and I managed to destroy my marriage. So I lived back with my parents and in time I learned a lot about computers and to this day fix them as a side job but I went to school at bucks county community college and got my associates degree in computer information science mostly thru online courses and then a miracle happened around the year 2000 I was graduating but before then I was tested at St Josephs hospital in Philly and low and behold the epilepsy was gone. I finally was able to drive again and got a decent job where I work to this day, along with the computer jobs. Well if you spent all this time reading congratulations lol. I doubt this is of much interest unless you have to live thru it but for anyone who really wants to know this has been my life so far with the one thing I didn't add¦ I met a girl in the Philippines 7 years ago and went to meet her in person for the first time a year ago and again this April if I can get my computer business working better I hope to bring her over and no she is not a spring chicken, she is about my age. Whats left to say? Well I never attended any of the reunions I was a pretty quiet person in Neshaminy and I sort of doubt too many would have missed me aside from a few the first time. I must admit I probably wouldn't even have considered writing this at all except I recently did talk to Jeannie from school thru emails, probably more than we ever did at school and I guess I got a little inspiration from her. Thats about it, be well everyone and dont forget thanksgiving is not just a holiday, you live with gifts you can give thanks for all year long Be well and take care, John
