John's Story
After East High School. I attended UW Superior (History BS and MS) . Right after graduate school I was drafted into the Army and served a tour in Vietnam as an infantry platoon sergeant in the 101at Airborne Division.
Following the service I returned to Superior to teach for two years at the college. I married Marcia Olson (Superior East '61) in 1973 and moved to the Twin Cities for grad school at the U of M. After that I taught for another year at Normandale Community College. College jobs were hard to find after the draft ended, so I changed careers and went into state government. After a couple of years as an analyst I moved into IT and senior management in a couple of different agencies, serving as Assistant and Deputy Commissioner and Chief Information Officer before retiring in 2009 as the state's director of strategic IT planning.
Marcia and I have two children - ...Expand for more
Anne is a Veterinarian Technician and Chris is a recent Law Enforcement graduate and is hoping for a career in that field. We have three wonderful grandkids and lots of cats and dogs around. We've been active in the community of South St Paul since buying our house in 1976. I spent sixteen years on the School Board here, and continue to be involved in civic matters. At the present time I teach senior citizens how to use computers twice a week, and work to support veterans and active duty troops as Chairman of the Board for a national veterans group and on the local steering committee for the Yellow Ribbon program. I recently published a book of poems I wrote in Vietnam.
I'm working with Carol Gabrys Madden and others to plan our 50th high school reunion in August 2014, If you are a classmate and haven't heard about this event, please contact me and get on the mailing list.
