John's Story

Life Well, I retired in 2016 and am enjoying retirement. I play a lot of golf throughout the week. In addition to golf, I still teach online for several colleges. Prior to joining AI Thomas, I had my own company, I worked in the Florida Community College system. From 1999 through 2004, I was a resource development officer at Florida Community College in Jacksonville. From 1995 through 1999 I was Director of Institutional Research and Planning for Florida Keys Community College. I had a great office overlooking the Florida Bay. I moved to Key West with my now ex-wife who was the Director of Historic Preservation for the Florida Keys. Going back to the start, I am originally from Upstate New York, the city of Tonawanda to be exact. I spent the first 18 years of my life in a community located eight miles north of Buffalo and 12 miles south of Niagara Falls. I attended an elementary school, junior high school and senior high school all within a two-mile radius form my home. After graduating from high school in 1969, the same year as Woodstock, I embarked on a ten-year college career. I earned a BA in 1974 from Niagara University majoring in political science. Not having a clue what to do with the degree, I took the advise of a faculty member and applied for graduate school at Ball State U. in Muncie, IN (some will remember the famous study identifying Muncie as (Middletown, USA?). all State, I moved to Virginia Polytechnic Institute and SU in the hills of Virginia. The move to Virginia changed my focus from political science to economics. While at VPI, I had the opportunity to study under a Nobel Prize winning economist, James Buchanan. I finished my class work in 1978 and my dissertation in 1983. After finishing my class work in 1978, I accepted a summer position, which became full time, at the US Geological Survey in Reston, VA. While government employment was interesting, I choose to leave and accepted a position at the University of Dayton Research Institute as a Research Economist. Working at UD provided me the opportunity to complete my dissertation, which I defended in May 1983. Upon completing my dissertation, which was a study of the development of property rights in the coal industry, I ventured into the private sector, accepting a position in the Coal Department of CSX Corporation in Jacksonville, FL. I spent six years with CSX and in 1989 decided to make a career move by helping a personal friend run for the US Senate. This career move resulted in a five-year career as a political consultant. We moved to the Keys and now you know the whole story. 1983 - PhD - Economics - Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University 1976 - MA - Economics and Political Science - Ball State University 1974 - BA - Political Science - Niagara University
