John's Story
Workplace
After college I found a job in St Pete as a Manufacturing Supervisor in an Electronics assembly house (Jabil Circuit). After 7 months I was laid off and 2 weeks later I started a job in Chicago as a Quality Engineer in another electronics assembly house. 1 year later I was recruited to a growing company (1995) that I never heard of. I was hired at Nokia Mobile Phones in Dallas, Texas. I was hired as a Process Engineer. Nokia was a great place that spent thousands sending me to advanced electronics schools. With the industry booming I got recruited a year later by a small company in Orlando. At the time they were Restor, later changing their name to World Access (WAXS). I loved Nokia and Dallas, but this new offer was once again more money, plus big stock options and of course home (orlando). I was with them for 1 1/2yr in orlando where they grew from a 30 million dollar shop. Stock went from $7 a share to $32 a share. Life was good, Then they transferred me to Atlanta to open a new factory. Not offered as an move option, so off I went and developed great experience. Large budget, making all the decisions on factory layout and equipment selections, and so forth. Stock up ...Expand for more
to $40 a share, everyone fat and happy, company now 1 billion. Then it all came down. Luckly, I had sold all the options I could and cashed, but it all came down so hard they went Chapter 11. Everything happens for a reason. During the high profile job of developing a new factory I had made CEO level contacts and was recruited to take on a position of Engineering Manager. Packed up and moved from Atlanta to Melbourne. Got a condo on the beach and thought life was good again. After 2 months at ADS electronics, new owners come in. All is well and things seem to be going fine. I then get promoted to Director of Engineering after 7 months and am still thinking life should be cool. After 1 year I start to see that the owners are pretty cheap guys. Then I put my name on the market and a month later I am heading to Tampa to work at a Defense contractor as the Staff Engineering Manager. Well, 2 years of that and I decide electronics is all the same and I have a midlife. I spend just about 1 year advancing my flying experience and pretty much accidently landed a full time flying job. So now I am a commercial pilot. I hope this ride starts to slow down, I haven't had time for anything else.
