John's Story
Flunked out of Clemson – too immature. Drafted June ’70, Lived in Germany for a year and traveled as much as I could. Lots of hitchhiking. Went back to U of Md on GI bill, but $175/month didn’t go far. Lived in junk yard for 2 years while driving tow truck and scraping cars, (Oh boy, there are a LOT of stories there) and finally getting Management degree in ’76.
Chased love of life to Montana in ’78. In ’79, She went to law school in Boston, and I acquired position as bank examiner for the Feds (Federal Deposit Insurance Corp) at the Salt Lake office. (I am proficient in taking standardized exams). Love living out west. Wifey realized, due to the predominant culture of UT, progression in law career would be difficult. So, I moved us to Seattle in ’87, but she didn’t find a satisfactory position there, so acquired a position as staff attorney with the NV Supreme Court. 2 years later when wifey became Clerk of the Court , I resigned my position with the FDIC and moved to Carson City, NV. ahoe is my back yard.
When arrived in CC acquired real estate broker’s license and purchased an agency. RE sales people here are not very professional, so took advanced accounting classes and passed CPA exam. Became Controller of exotic South American wood importer till he closed the business, and then became an Examiner for the NV Insurance Division from which I retired July 2013.
Bought 14 acres on the old road to Lake Tahoe from CC – same road which my parents drove for their honeymoon in 1946. Small world. Designed and built house at urban/wilderness interface at 5500 feet in the mountains Remind me to tell you the “Bare (bear) scare story if meet face-to-face). Our Aspens along the trout stream are just turning. Still camp, sail and travel. Have visited 18 countries so far. Last sailing trip was the reefs of Belize in 42’ sloop.
No kids, just Irish wolfhounds. Father died in ’82, Mother in ’02. Don’t get back east much, too much to see out here and internationally.
That’s all for the greatly abbreviated story.
