One of John's favorite quotes is:"If I was any better I'd be twins!". More about John:"I was born in Gary Indiana and moved to Chicago at the ripe old age of 15. I went to Sullivan High school there and was in band and orchestra class. In orchestra class, second chair violin, a friend of mine,Jerry Goodman was there. Jerry Goodman was the fiddle player in a Chicago based band called The Flock, and later went on to be with The Dixie Dregs, and The Mahavishnu Orchestra. I am schooled in trumpet and was in the 1st Rock N Roll horn group in the city of Chicago called The A'rabs, which changed to The Exceptions, which changed to The Big Sound, which changed to Chicago Transit Athority, which changed to who we know now as the group Chicago. I have always wanted to play drums, so guess what? I taught myself how to play drums. My best friend at the time Mike Linn, who is an awesome drummer himself, used to take me downtown to Frank's Drum Shop & Bill Crouden's Drums Unlimited on Saturday morning's where I got to see and meet the greatest of the greatest drummers play. There I was at 16 now in the presence of Joe Morello, Philly Joe Jones, Gene Krupa, Louie Bellson, Art Blakely, and others. I watched their clinic's and listend to their records and thats how I learned to play. In 1965 my dad was transfered to St. Croix in the U.S. Virgin Islands where we lived until...Expand for more
late 1966. I came back to Chicago and moved back to Gary Indiana where I took a job as an autopsy assisstant in the morgue. I enlisted in the Navy and was turned down because of bad back problems. I moved to Boyne City Michigan in early 1967, forming 2 bands up there, and stayed until spring of 1968 when I moved to Baton Rouge. I started working as an orderly at one of the hospitals here and that summer went to work construction for about 18 mos. It took me 9 mos. after moving to Baton Rouge to find a band to play with. I used to hang out in a couple of music stores hoping to meet somebody who needed a drummer. Finally in late 1968 a guy named Dennis Duvic said he had some guys that wanted to play and he needed a drummer. We hadn't even had a name and were rehearsing at a music store called The Music House. A girl (Bonnie Guidry) knocked on the door after dark wanting to buy guitar strings. We let her in, she said she was singer, we put a mic in her hand and it was like magic. The missing link was found. And so, Everybody's Pillow was formed, and for me, the rest is history and launched my musical career in Baton Rouge and nationally. I am greatfull to have been with awesome talented musicians over the past 40 years of who I have learned so much from. I have also been fourunate enough to have been with bands that were not only headiners themselves, but had the privledge to open for many big headlining national acts across the country. From 1992-1995 my wife and I moved to the Virgin Islands to work at Hess Oil so I didn't get to play music. It's been great ride and I have made alot of friends in the entertainment world. Thanks Everybody!".
