John's Story
My story is short. I was born in Chicago, and reared in Maywood. I attended St. James School grades 1-3, and Emerson School, 4-8.
I then attended Proviso East High School from 1964-68. I earned a varsity letter in Gymnastics, and competed in Boy's gymnastics on the stillrings. I was in gymnastics Soph.-Senior year.
I went to Western Illinois University in Macomb, Il.I graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in Physical Education. I was certified to teach grades K-12 in Phys. Ed. At Western I competed in gymnastics for 3 years. I earned a Varsity Letter there too. I took a 7th Place on the Stillrings in the 1970 NAIA Gymnastic's Championships at Stout State College in Menominee, Wi.
Men's gymnastics was discontinued in 1973 at Western. In 1972, I got into competitve powerlifting, and won 2 Intermural Odd Lift Championships in 1971, AND 1972.My best lifts were bench press 305 ...Expand for more
lbs, curl 140 lbs, and deadlifted 455 lbs.
After Western, I taught Junior High Boy's Physical Education for 10 years, and then went into nutritional supplement sales. In 1984 I took 2nd place at Fox's Body and Power Bench press meet, with a personal best lift of 415 lbs. at a bodyweight of 242 lbs. My alltime best bench press was an assisted 505 lbs. with a bench shirt in 1986.
I am entering a Bench press contest in April of 2009. I am planning on benching 350 lbs. in the Master's Division. This is age group 55-60. And will be without equipment assistance.
I stayed single. Never married or had children.I stay in good shape as you can see in the picture. I am pretty fit, and still very strong. My two greatest influences besides my Dad, were Bill Roetzheim, the greatest gymnastic's coach of alltime, and Robert Clow, my gymnastic's coach at Western. I will always love the rings.
