John's Story
Hey There!
Where to begin? Nothing can be said to describe my boyhood life in Penngrove, California, except I loved it! The land, the animals, lots of hard work, it was really a theater of images that intermitly float by and are occasionally latched on to for memory.
Growing up close to the land, my life through public school seemed secondary. Upon graduating I headed north to Alaska. I was able to secure a job as a cargo kicker and occasional parachute guide on forest fires. In a couple of years my agility testing scores were on the wane and that is one of the main reasons why I went back to school. Santa Rosa Junior College was the first of many stops.
After a year at Santa Rosa Junior College, I attended and was awarded a degree in Economics at UC Berkeley followed by a master of Urban and Regional Planning at UC Irvine. My interest is housing and I am to receive a Masters in Sustainability and the Built Environment from UC Davis. I hope to return to Sonoma County shortly an...Expand for more
d begin to work in my chosen field of housing. There are many people among us that are in need of a decent place to reside. They are often relegated to the sidelines in their quest for decent housing and this is something that has always concerned me.
There is a gap of about twenty five years I have failed to mention. I started Spirit Whitewater in 1979 and ran the Kings River out of Kings Canyon National Park. What a blast! Seven days a week for four months, 40 employees, and 150 customers every day, the good times seemed to go on forever. And yes I had a baby girl in 1986 who is now a dean at Golden Gate University in San Francisco.
Then there was the stroke I had in 1990 that should be mentioned. A hemoragic type not caused by any physical condition but by a bursting of a connector vein. I have some residual left by the stroke but for the most part I am relatively mobile.
Anyway, I was looking back to see if you were looking back at me. Make it a good one, Johnny
