When I joined the Army in 1967 I filled out all the paperwork and the recruiter asked for a copy of my birth certificate...When I got a copy I noticed that the name on the certificate was Juan....not John....when I asked my mother about it she explained that ...Expand for more
the school system back then (1957) would not accept hispanic first names for new students so they listed me as John....the Army would only accept the name on the birth certificate so I became Juan once again and to honor my Mom and Dad's wishes. I remain Juan.
