John's Story
After graduating from DuVal in 1964, I attended the University of Maryland, College Park, where I majored in English and minored in History. I was on the track team and wrote sports for the college newspaper and the yearbook. I graduated with honors in English in 1968 and was accepted into a Ph.D. program at Duke University. Unfortunately, I was drafted and only got as far as my Masters degree before enlisting in the Navy in 1969. I served as an enlisted navigation and piloting specialist (Quartermaster) on an amphibious cargo ship for a year before being accepted into Naval Officer Candidate School in Newport, Rhode Island. I was commissioned as a Naval Intelligence Officer in 1971 and spent the next 25 years on active duty, finally retiring as a Commander in 1996. Retiring from the federal government at the end of 2016, I've spent my time as a volunteer at the USO Lounge at Reagan National Airport, a docent at the Stabler-Leadbeater Apothecary Museum in Old Town Alexandria, Virginia, and a volunteer at the International Spy Museum in Washington, DC. I also belong to a few military organizations and serve on various boards and committees. I met my wife, the former Pamela Jane Heaton, from Yorkshire, England, during a port visit to Perth, Australia in 1981. We were married the following year, and after living in Hawaii, Japan, and Washington state, finally settled down in the Washington, DC area. We've lived in Alexandria, Virginia since 1998. Pamela's son, Franz Ward, is an IT systems engineer living in Stone Ridge, Virginia.
