John's Story
After high school I went to Merced College played football and partied a lot. Married Lesa Johns (Merced High '67) on April 12, 1969 and still married to her. Drafted into the Army December 4, 1969. Spent a year in Viet Nam. Mike Prows (Atwater High '66) and I were in the same unit for a short time. His tour was over a short time after I got there. Jon Lebada was in-country at the same time also. Bud Bailey and Bob Soetaert and others were also there at different times. After I got back from Viet Nam I went back to Merced College and actually studied. Being married and raising a son, John II, tends to straighten you up. After that life consisted of work, holidays, especially Thanksgiving and Christmas, our daughter Kili, being born, coaching kids football, baseball, playing city recreation basketball and softb...Expand for more
all, taking up golf latter, foster care provider, adopting 2 boys in 1999 and 2001, they are 21 and 19 now, grand-kids, Lesa retired in Jan 2007 from the state legislature, me in June 2012 from the city of Atwater, camping on the coast and mountains, more golf, dad and brother Eric (Atwater High '70) died, mom still lives in Atwater, she's 86. I have been very fortunate to have some very close friends that we have shared this life with: Jim and Judy (Zoller) (AHS '66), Keith (AHS '66) and Theresa (Medeiros) (Hilmar '72) McIntire, and Wayne (AHS'66) and Diane (England '70) Van Wagner. These 3 couples and Lesa and I have spent every 4th of July and New Years together for the past 40 plus years. Good times, good fun, good friends. I hope to reconnect with everyone at our 50th class reunion in 2016. See you there.
