John's Story
Life
I founded Carpenter/Robbins Commercial Real Estate in 1993. I'm building this new company (since 1993) into a regional and national tenant representation firm.
Previously, I was a VP / Director of Cushman & Wakefield (Silicon Valley), Vice President and Regional Manager of Norris, Beggs & Simpson (San Francisco), Vice President and Operating Partner at Lincoln Property Company, Development Manager for Town Center East in Foster City, and Senior Sales Consultant and Sales Manager at CB Richard Ellis (Denver & SF). My first job out of college was with Memorex Corporation in Sales. Putting it on paper sure sounds like a lot of jobs. Depending on your view, I was either succesful or couldn't hold a job.
After going to Mt.Sac, I got an MBA and a BS in Industrial Management from San Jose State University. I also spent one semester at UC Hastings Law School, but found out I would make a lousy lawyer and gave up my seat only to be drafted about 2 months short of my 25th birthday. Served a tour in Vietnam and due to a non-combat injury I am a (not very) disabled veteran.

I served as a Trustee for the private College Preparatory School of Oakland and now serves on the Board of the Family Support Services of the Bay Area and the University of California Lawrence Hall of Science.
In 2007 my wife and I finished our 3rd straight 10 hour hike of Half Dome in Yosimite and decided that was enough of half dome. 2008 Completed a ride around Lake Tahoe. In 2009 prostate cancer kept me off the trail, but everying worked out fine. In 2010, plan to try for my first 14,000Ft peak in Colorado
I decided not to retire, and am planning a few years of work (but not that hard)because I am such a lousy golfer and have no hobbies which makes me a boring conversation unless its about work.
My wife of 41 years and I are enjoying our 2 grandchildren who live in Colorado. As with many of you, my proudest achievement is my two children who have grown up to be well educated good citizens and good people (but occassionaly unemployed). After years of visiting, we are building another home in Sunriver, Oregon as a kid catcher but expect to continue living in the SF Bay Area.
All in all, it been one hell of a ride and I feels like there is more to come. So stand by Arroyo alumni.
