John's Story

Life I retired from the Air Force almost 2005 and decided at that time to stay in Maryland where the jobs were... Well, we stayed in Maryland until the company I was with lost the contract I was on and other world-events had seriously changed the employment market for me. So we sold our house and moved to Ohio where I am now working as an Information System Security Manager for the U.S. Air Force's Fighter and Advanced Aircraft Directorate. I'm also still married to Judy Wingler (from Urbana's Class of 1977) and we've celebrated 39 years together last February. Our 2 kids are grown and out of the house. Our son finished his degree in Sociology at Wright State University in Dayton, OH the Spring of 2011 and joined the Air Force in 2012. He is now assigned to a base in Texas, is still married and they have three children ranging in age from 6 to 3 months. Our daughter is married to a fellow Air Force Retiree and they have 2 boys who are now almost 16 and 20 years old. Life has been pretty interesting since high-school and is only getting better with each additional year. School Urbana High School - what can I say? I attended, I passed, I LEFT. College It's all a blur. Too many schools in too many different towns to remember. At thirty-three years (has it really been that long?!) after high school, with three associates degrees and a bachelors, I'm still in college. I finally completed my Master of Science degree in Computer Security Engineering - thought I should get a degree to prove to some folks that I really do...Expand for more
have a clue about these computer-thingees. So apparently I have finally decided what I want to do when I grow up. But I guess it won't exactly kill me to be a student for my whole life. I might even take to the other side of "the big desk" in some college classroom someday (Now THERE'S a SCARY thought - me as a professor.) Workplace As a Senior Information Systems Security Engineer and Cyber Security Manager now, I get to play with computers and computer-like systems for various Government offices. Since I retired from the military I've worked on projects with the Department of Defense, the Department of State, the Library of Congress, the Department of Justice and a few other DC-area places too - and now at Wright-Patterson AFB. Hmmm, ... where should I work next? That's one of the wonderful things about my job; you get to work in all sorts of really interesting places doing some very VERY interesting things. Military I joined in 1982. Learned all there was to learn in one job then re-trained - did that twice, according to the official record. The last time was the best though. I got this great job with computers which translated very easily to the civilian workforce. I retired from the Air Force as a Senior Master Sergeant (E-8) on 1 Sept 2005. After almost 23 years, with many interesting places seen and wonderful experiences gained; it was definitely time to move on. So, I moved on - with lots of pride in all the accomplishments I had achieved, the many wonderful friends I had made, and no regrets about leaving.
