John's Story

9/3/2015 Greetings friends and classmates! With the class of '75 40th reunion happening this month one's thoughts turn to fun memories and a lifetime of friends. If anyone is interested here's a condensed history of life after high school for me; Attended ECC while working at Roy's Chuckwagon and then Cruise-A-Home (luxury houseboats) in Everett. In January of '77 I began basic training for USAF at Lackland AFB, San Antonio and then attended USAF School of Applied Aerospace Sciences at Sheppard AFB, Wichita Falls, Texas. Graduated with Honors and was transferred to Mountain Home AFB, Idaho where I was a maintenance crew chief on F-111 fighter/bombers. Supported several temporary duty assignments around the world including Nevada, Hawaii, Guam, Korea, New Zealand, and Alaska before transferring to AF Reserve at McChord AFB, Wa. Worked C-141 Starlifter maintenance for four years while concurrently beginning a career at Boeing Aircraft in Everett. Purchased acreage outside Arlington in late '86 after working 747 and 767 Preflight and Delivery on the Boeing Flightline. Began a one year sabbatical from Boeing in '86 to attend USAF Flight Engineer training in Altus, Ok. I returned to Boeing in 1987 and moved to Arlington while maintaining flight status at McChord as C-141 Flight Engineer, USAF Reserves. Accumulated over 2500 flight hours supporting routine and contingency missions around the globe, including over 600 flight hours in support of Desert Shield/Desert Storm after being recalled to active duty. I retired from the Air Force Reserve in January of 2001 as a Master Sergeant (E-7) with Master Aircrew wings. My flying career took me to numerous States and foreign locations including Australia, New Zealand, the Aleutian Islands and Alaska, Puerto Rico, Sicily, Kwajalein Atoll, Japan, Guam, Korea, the Philippine...Expand for more
s, American Samoa, Spain, Oman, Saudi Arabia, Egypt, Turkey, Bahrain, England, Portugal, Germany, Italy, Labrador, Diego Garcia BIOT, NW Territories, and a couple I can't mention. Of all the mission types I participated in, from airdrop to humanitarian aid, to presidential support, the most fun was working air shows. My all-time favorite being the 50th anniversary of the Berlin Airlift at Tempelhof airport in Berlin. Being a crew of airlifters we were treated especially royally and yes, Frau Kubin and Frau Harvey of CHS, I did get to actually use a tiny bit of my high school Deutsch, which thoroughly tickled many of the thousands of locals who toured our airplane. In 1997 I upgraded from airframe and powerplant mechanic at Boeing to Field QA Inspector on the 777. I supported special assignments to Texas, North Carolina, Germany, France and Italy. In 2007 I withdrew from the Machinists union and began a salaried Quality Specialist job on the 787 program. Prior to early retirement in January of 2014 I was the Lead Quality Integration Focal for the 787 program, 3rd shift. I continue to work part-time as sole proprietor of a small excavating and landscaping firm, Bullworks LLC. I'm available for varied tasks including clearing, stump removal, grading, ditching, light hauling, pruning, rototilling, pasture mowing, etc. SInce retiring from "official" workI have had more time for travel and for friends and family. I've been doing a lot of skiing (Telluride, Park City, Whistler, Heavenly, Steamboat, Brundage, Schweitzer) and generally trying to get in shape after a decade of working desk jobs. My partner of many years (Ann) is a fellow skier and traveler who is also recently retired. We currently have travel planned to Lake Tahoe, Palm Springs and Idaho. Our longer term travel plans include Aruba, Scandinavia, and Italy.
