John's Story
Well I guess to start with, I was this tall skinny geeky quiet kid that played the Trumpet in the Band, and I
was also in the choir,& the drama club.
I lived just around the corner from F/F. elem. on the
corner of Bell & Clay. I had a long time crush on Dian
Blankenship, but she was always picking on me when I was around so she never really knew that I liked her(oh-
well,I guess I'll live).I dated Evelyn Tipton for awhile,
and Donna Woods was always my Little Sister.(Hi Donna).
I spent most of my time in various Music functions or
Drama prod. And mostly hung out with upper classmen.
Bruce Cowan was (still is I think) a very good friend
along with his now wife Ruth Biggs. Then there was Frank
(Forrest) Smith whom by my last account was a S/S -Police Officer (as was Bruce in L.A.) . I ran around alot with Tom Iverson, and Harlan Henderson (now deceased). There were quite a few others during my school years as time went on. I used to think that I really didn't have to many friends in H/S but as I look back in time I realize I was actually blessed with more
then my fair share and really never knew it until later.
Two people that became my best friends late in my Jr year, were Pat Brennan and Cindy Mueller. Tom and I
were really close for awhile, but then he ran off to join the Army, and that was Cool.
Well after Hi-school I got bored -- so I ran off to
join the Marines (go figure that one out ???). Spent
most of my tour in (your gonna hate this) Hawaii, all
except a short deviation trip to Nam. When I got out
4 yrs. later I lived in the San Diego area for awhile
before coming Home to Fairfield. Found it really hard
to readjust to civilian life again, so about a year later
I ran off again. This time i joined the Army, (your
gonna hate this part again) where I once again spent
my time in Hawaii flying around in helicopters all day.
It was tough duty flying around in the canyons and
off to other Islands from time to time, and then making myself go to the Beach (had to work on my tan you know) in the afternoon. But the worst part of
all was forcing myself to partake of the night life after
the Beach,(man the sacrifices I made ).
Hawaii is a strange place to live. Either you hate it ,
or you Love it. I don't know if I ever really made up my mind about it.
Anyway, after the Army I returned home again,
and worked for my next oldest brother and his Carpet
store, then located behind the short stop by the track
before you entered SS. Thats when I met My Wife.
Strange enough I had kn...Expand for more
own of her through her two
brothers, Jack & Rick Permenter (I'm sure a lot of
you knew of them at least).
I was at the short stop one day when I ran into
(of all people) Tom Iversons sister, who was working
across the tracks in SS. at a little cafe next to the old
Odd Fellows Hall, it was called Louie's. She told me to drop in have lunch sometime. So I did. (this is getting to be a long story isn't it??) Anyway thats when I met
Robbie for the first time in person. I asked her out to
go see the Band I was kind of managing at the time.
We were doing a gig at the Moose lodge. We hit it off
together from there. By the way the Band's name
some might recall, was "SunRise". Pat Bennan; lead guitar & vocal, Tom Skinner; rythym guitar and Lead
singer, Steve Salomon ;,elec.piano and guitar, with
Alan (can't rem last name) on the drums.
Well a few months down the road and many gigs later, we got married and we both ran off together,
to of all places, Iran. I went to work for Bell Helicopter and the Shaw of Iran. Needless to say it
was in late 1978 and they were fixin to throw a war,
and us Americans were asked to leave as we were not on the invite list at that time.(that came later
when they took over the Embassy). So now feeling
rejected and left out we came back home and moved
out near Walnut Grove on the Sac. River for a couple of years till we decided to move again. Guess where
this time??? Yup, back to Hawaii again, (you know how expensive it is over there???) . So three & a half
years we came back home again(thank god they didn't tear down Fairfield & put up a shopping mall
while we were gone.)
To sum it all up we stayed a few months, now broke and destitute, we some how managed to scrape up
enough money and a car, thx Dad, to move once more to Phoenix, Arizona, where we have now resided for the last 20+ years. I've been a Truck Driver for about 17 of those years and Robbie Has Been a Nurse about the same. Who knows we might even retire and settle down out here one of these years.
Presently we both belong to the American Legion,
where we both participate in helping to provide entertain to our Post and others. We are also Karaoke
Hosts for our Post on Friday nites, along with a Saturday nite party now and then at the house.
So if your in town, look us up, we're in the book,
and always enjoy the company. Hey who knows,
maybe we'll get together and sing a song or two
at our 40th Reunion if there is one.
