John's Story
Hello! I hope that your life has been as wonderful as mine has been. After HHS, I headed to McDaniel for college, biology was a natural choice of major. As an aside to my biology degree, I took classes to become certified to teach 5th - 12th grade biology. The two most important things in my life happened at the tail end of my senior year. The first is that I was introduced to the person of Jesus. Having examined the evidence, I decided that he really was who he said that he was. I've been following him since. The second event was that I met Sharon - my wife. Woo Hoo!
After graduation from WMC, I took an extra semester to do my student teaching. This was followed by a stint of over two years teaching 7th graders. At the end of that time, I knew that I liked teaching, but that I sure didn't like teaching 7th graders. I wanted to teach adults. So, I headed to graduate school at the University of Tennessee Knoxville to earn an M.S. degree in botany and a Ph.D. in ecology. I then taught at the University of Tennessee for three years. This was followed up by twenty one years of teaching at (same school - different names) Fort Wayne Bible College -> Summit Christian College -> Taylor University Fort Wayne. Unfortunately (to put it mildly) Taylor closed our campus during that nasty recession in 2009. I was very glad to find a one-year job teaching at Indiana University - Purdue University Fort Wayne. I was mostly teaching anatomy and physiology to future nurses and other health care workers. I retired in the summer of 2019.We still live in Fort Wayne, so I rent a room here in Lima for M-W nights and head back to the Fort on Thursdays.
Sharon and I were married in 1977. Our family grew as we added two sons in 1981 and 1985 and then three daughters in 1989, 1992, and 1995. We have wonderful kids. As of September 2023, Noel is married to Alicia and they have twin girls on the way. Luke married Kim and they have 8 yo Lillah and 5 yo William. Janelle is our third. Anna married Nathan and they are also expecting twins - a boy and a girl. Charis is our fifth.
I've always enjoyed outdoor recreational activities. In my younger years, I'd do a fair amount of backpacking. After marriage and the kids came along, we'd go tent camping for vacations. Along the way I learned how to repair house appliances and cars -- mostly out of necessity. We've owned four houses. Each was bought as a fixer-up-er that had sections gutted and remodeled. So along the line, I've learned framing, wiring, and plumbing. I tend to skip around on hobbies, so they've varied a lot. I've also remodeled extensive sections of the houses that are owned by our children. I have had an ever growing garden of native plants that take up much of my urban back yard. I do some reading and have a small collection of orchids.
