John's Story
After High School I started college but didn't really know what in the world I wanted to do. After a few colossal mistakes and 2 wasted years in college I ended up getting drafted. I got lucky because while I was in the recruitment room filling out paperwork, the Officer-in-Charge stuck his head in the door and said that the other branches of the service had not met their quota's. He said if we didn't want to be "humpin' bullets in the boonies" we had five minutes to enlist in one of the other branches of service. Well, since I liked the ocean and definitely didn't like the idea of getting shot at, I joined the Navy. As it turned out, I got stationed in Hawaii and ended up going to the Naval Gun-line off the coast of Vietnam. Through the Navy I got to travel, learn a lot about the world, surf Hawaii (was stationed out of there for 3 years) and a lot of other cool places I never could have traveled to, and grow up a lot.
After the Navy I attended Houston Baptist University and then the University of Houston. I majored in Art Education at HBU and switched to Design when I went to the UofH. Unfortunately I had to quit just short of graduation because my oldest daughter came along and I had to join the real world and get a job. I eventually ended up with my own design studio primarily doing Illustration work. In the mid 80's we moved to Atlanta and I was hired by an Exhibit and Special Events company, C. Henning Studios, whose design philosophy centered on the "WOW" factor. There I got to develop design solutions for all the disciplines involved in the creation of comprehensive Trade Show and Special Event programs. Our two biggest clients were Coca-Cola and Reebok, Int. One of the coolest things at C. Henning was that I had the opportunity to work with the 1996 Atlanta Olympic Committee, and was one of the designers who created the winning AOC presentation given in Tokyo. GOD definitely blessed me and I will forever owe Cassandra Henning a debt of gratitude for taking a chance and hiring me.

llustrated, and oversaw all production on stage sets, lighting, props and collateral materials. While there, I got to design presentations for a lot of Olympic Corporate Sponsors. I eventually opened up my own Special Events company and did work for companies like Fox, Turner Broadcasting, Castle Rock Productions, and UPN. Things seemed to be going good and then, yep, you guessed it, I went through a divorce.
I wanted to come back home to Texas so I moved my Special Events company to Houston. There wasn't a market here at the time nor the budgets for the type of work I was doing so I ended up closing my shop. I then worked for various Ad Agencies and Exhibit Companies until joining Exhibit Network, International where I have been for 7 years. I used to draw and render everything by hand until I realized I needed to learn the computer or I'd be out of work. So, about 10 years ago, I taught myself how to use CAD and several 3D programs. Man what a blessing! I can do in one day what it used to take me 3 days to do!
Before going to Atlanta I was an avid surfer, surfboard maker, and fisherman. On my return to Houston I picked up right where I left off; surfing, fishing, and making custom surfboards. I also met a wonderful woman named Sandi who I thank GOD for everyday. Five years ago we moved to Galveston with our our two dogs Buddy and Jessie, and a crazy Parakeet named Macko. We bought a "fixer-upper" that was built in 1895 and located down the street from a place I learned to surf at, the 37th street jetties. It's a cool house, but IKE set us back in our restoration efforts. That's okay though, GOD is good and HE is helping us get it done. And through GOD's blessing, we are enjoying ourselves and "taking life one wave at a time!".
