John Shayne:  

I wanted to update those of you who visit classmates that my beloved husband, John Shayne, passed away on March 13, 2012 from brain cancer. He enjoyed visiting this site and remembering his old friends from school. I am posting his obituary here for those of you who are interested: Dr. John Patrick Shayne, age 57, graduated to eternal life on Tuesday, March 13, 2012 at 3:30 a.m., the hour of Divine Mercy, after a long battle with brain cancer. John was a graduate of SUNY at Buffalo in 1976 and SUNY at Buffalo Medical School in 1980. John was a general surgery resident at the Eastern Virginia Graduate School of Medicine, graduated in 1985, and became a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons. He practiced general surgery for many years at Kings' Daughters Hospital in Staunton, Virginia and at Augusta Medical Center in Fishersville, Virginia. He went on to practice general surgery in San Antonio, Texas and then at Baptist Hospital Easley in Easley, South Carolina. John was an active church member wherever he lived, most recently a member of St. Matthew Catholic Church in San Antonio, Texas. He was a third degree knight in the Knights of Columbus, a member of the First Saturday Men's Prayer Group, and a "Saintly Sixer." He modeled his life around the beatitudes and Mother Teresa's wisdom, "We can do no great things, only small things with great love." John enjoyed family vacations on the Outer Banks of North Carolina, walks on San Antonio's Riverwalk, cooking, listening to music, lively political debate, the Yankees, the Spurs, and his Irish heritage. John was known for his caring, gentleness, integrity, sense of humor, love of his family, patients, and coworkers, and passion for general surgery.
