John is committed to working for the citizens of Lakewood.
A tenured history professor and prior faculty president at the Pierce College â Fort Steilacoom Campus, he has worked with students for 23 years. For the past six years, he has served on the College Cabinet, where he works with administration officials and the Board of Trustees in crafting the collegeâs multi-million dollar budget and policies. He has also received the Outstanding Faculty Award ten times.
His work at the college is characterized by transparency of action, a common sense approach to challenges and a commitment to free market principles.

rations officer in a multi-service Army battalion (Navy/Army/Marine) responsible for the movement of military assets from the Pacific Northwest and Alaska to various points around the globe.
John is a former Lakewood City Council member (pro tempore). During 2003, he worked in a collegial manner with fellow council members and city officials to improve public safety, enhance the economic climate, promote education, enhance parks and other recreational areas, and further relations with Joint Base Lewis-McChord (JBLM) and Camp Murray.
From 1999 to 2003, he has served on the Cityâs Redevelopment Advisory Board, and in 2006 he chaired the exploratory group for the building of the new Lakewood Police Station. He has also served on the Law Enforcement Support Agency (LESA). He is a member of the Lakewood Historical Society and the Lakewood Chamber of Commerce.
Since 2005, on his own time and in conjunction with The Ranger Newspaper, John has embedded as a photojournalist five times to Iraq and three times to Afghanistan with JBLM and Washington National Guard soldiers. For his journalism on JBLM soldiers in Iraq in 2007, he was nominated for an Emmy.
A native of Indiana, John earned a BA in History from Central Michigan University and a MA in History from Pacific Lutheran University.
He and his wife, Melanie, have three children.".
