I was born in Cannonsburg, PA and my family moved to Miami shortly after that. I attended 1st through 5th grades at St. Theresa Catholic School in Coral Gables. In 6th grade I was at Sylvania Heights Elementary School, and 7th grade was at Riviera Junior High. I attended South Miami Junior High for 8th and 9th grades, and Southwest Miami High School until graduation in 1972. I was very active in Band during junior and senior high as well as the Civil Air Patrol.
After graduating in '72, I went on to FSU, got a degree in Music Education and tried my hand at teaching. After several months I realized that I didnÂt want to spend my life as a teacher, and accepted a position with the IRS in Miami. After working there for several years, I moved to Lakeland, FL for about 18 months, then on to Jacksonville. While in Jax, I was picked up for a position in Memphis and went there for a year of training, still with the IRS. After finishing up there I was assigned to Greensboro, NC in 1980 as a Telecommunications Analyst. New Years Eve of 1981 I met my wife Cheryll (Daly) in Washington DC while visiting friend Bruce Garrett for the holidays. I moved to DC in 1982 and we were married there in 83'. Later that year we moved back to Greensboro.
In '86 we moved to Atlanta for 5 long years, and then to Columbia, SC in '91. We love it here and have set down deep roots in the community. We actually live in Irmo, a small community outside of the city. We have three children, a girl and two boys. Melanie is a nurse and now lives in Charleston, Jeff attends USC here in Columbia, and lives near the University with several friends. I was involved with for 15 years here. Tim is also a second degree black belt in karate and teaches at the studio. This is the first summer in 12 years I haven't been away on some scout trip with one of them. It's very strange for me not to have spend at least one week with one of them. In the summer of 2005, Tim and I went to Philmont Scout Ranch in New Mexico for two weeks of hiking through the mountains. He's also the one who got me involved in rock climbing and the one who likes to scuba dive with me as well. In 2003, Jeff and I spent 2 weeks canoeing and fishing in Minnasota on the boundary lakes with Canada. The summer of 06,Tim and I spent two weeks sailing in the keys. I'm going to miss these trips with them.
Cheryll and I enjoy cruises with our friends and numerous family and church activities. Im May of this year (2007), I was ordained as a permenant Deacon in the Catholic Church, after 5 years of study and formation. I currently have ministerial and Sacramental duties at St. Peters Church here in Columbia, where we've attended since we moved here in '91. God has blessed us in many ways, and we are thankful.
Since Jeff started in college, we've maintained our close relationship by going to the local firing range for target practice. We manage to get there several times a month and spend a few hours in a non-competative atmosphere. This is something my dad started with me when I graduated from FSU to serve the same purpose. We have a good time, just as my dad and I did. Tim has never been interested in shooting sports so I'll have to plan a different activity for us, maybe rock climbing at the local clumbing club. I'm also hoping he'll continue to help me with the high school youth group at church, which I've been leading since last year.
