John's Story

Life I left Charles Carroll Middle School in New Carrollton, Maryland, in 9th grade and went to high school in Clarksville, Tennessee. After graduating from CHS, I went to the University of Maryland. I grew hair down to the middle of my back and lived in a hippy van on campus. When I graduated, I worked for a few months and then went to law school at Vanderbilt. Law school was a three year psychotic break, but I met some great people and actually learned a few things along the way. Some would question that, however, because when I graduated in 1977, I became the first licensed attorney to join the Metro Nashville Police Department. I was a street cop for five and a half years and even got promoted to sergeant. Being a police officer was without doubt the best thing I ever did. For a variety of reasons, however, I joined the U.S. Attorney's Office in Washington, DC, in 1982, as an Assistant U.S. Attorney. By 1985, I was in the Special Prosecutions Unit where every case was like reading a novel. In 1990, my dad became ill and I went looking for a better cost of living so I could move him in with me. I took a position with the U.S. Attorney's Office in Phoenix and moved Dad and his obnoxious cat to Arizona with me. After Dad died in 1993, I stayed on until June of 2000, when I left the Department of Justice to found a software company. The company was up and running in a year, and on Sept...Expand for more
ember 11, 2001, I knew I had to get back in the fight. So I freaked out the board of directors, resigned, sold out my stock and set out to get back into a U.S. Attorney's Office. By a great stroke of luck, a friend at the U.S. Attorney's Office in the Virgin Islands heard I was looking and offered a position. It took a nanosecond to accept and I started there in March of 2002. I had a lot of interesting cases running the anti-terrorist task force (I'd tell you about them, but then I'd have to . . . you know). In October of 2003, I accepted a detail to the Criminal Division at Main Justice and moved to Virginia. In April of 2005 I made the transition from the U.S. Attorney's Office to the Asset Forfeiture and Money Laundering Section of the Criminal Division at Main Justice. There, among other things, I used my experience and contacts to facilitate cooperation in multi-district and international investigations. In 2014, I suffered a stroke. I recovered enough to return to work a few months later, but I can take a hint. In June of 2017, I retired after 32 years with DOJ and moved to Arizona. I had such a good time at the 50th reunion, that I built a house in Clarksville and moved into it with my sister and her husband in 2023. I've kept in touch with some of my friends from school days, but would like to hear from more, so this website seems like a good idea. Hope to hear from you soon.
