John's Story

"Dreams can come true!" Life: I moved to Independence in 1978 from Kansas City. I had no friends and life was tough. I was shy and a skinny kid. My high school years were the hardest in my life. When I graduated in May 1981, I didn't know what to do with my life. I was broke and had no future. There was high unemployment in Independence, Missouri (and still is), so I joined the military. My dream was to travel to different countries, so I joined the Air Force on Sept. 28, 1981. I was able to visit 14 countries and 31 states and see such places as Paris, London, Brussels, Amsterdam, Calais, Munich, Frankfurt, Rome, etc. I was able to see such sites as the Eiffel Towel, Big Ben, Buckingham Palace, St. Louis Arch, Alamo, Golden Gate Bridge, Mt. Rushmore, Mayan Pyramids in Copan, Honduras and the Roman Colleseum. Although the military helped me visit a lot of places, I wasn't able to go to school. I left the Air Force in 1989 and went to UMKC for a Bachelor's Degree. I finally matured and knew what I wanted out of life. I missed the military and all of the friends that I had. I joined the Air Force Reserve in 1995. I also went to Sanford-Brown College which I still regret. I enjoyed school and ended up with three degree's. So much for your prediction that I would never get into college and being a janitor, Mrs. Tapp! (ha ha!) My last degree I made the honor roll and the national dean's list. I stayed a bachelor for my first 41 years of my life. But changed my mind when I me...Expand for more
t a wonderful lady who was the love of my life. We got married in 2004. For our honeymoon, we drove to Pike's Peak, Mesa Verde, the Four Corners Monument, the Grand Canyon, Hoover Dam and of course, Las Vegas. This year (2008), I lost 45 pounds so I could look good at my retirement ceremony. I retired from the Air Force Reserves (Technical Sergeant) at McConnell AFB, Kansas. I will miss all of my military friends. I'm just doing office work now on my civilian job. I lost several jobs (careers) because I have a sleep disorder and it nearly killed me five years ago! I never could figure out why I was always tired even after a normal eight hours of sleep. My wife discovered that I wasn't breathing one night and saved my life. I may not have amounted to much but I have lived my dreams of travel, college, adventure and being married to a wonderful lady. To those younger people out there that think that they can't do anything, my advice is to keep trying hard and don't give up! If you have nothing, join the military. It made me a better person. I wanted to make a special tribute to my late sister Susan Ann (Sutton) Shelton Hunsaker, William Chrisman Graduate 1982. See Album! She was in a car accident and was in a coma for two days. She died on November 17, 1996, the worst day of my life. She didn't wear her seatbelt, so please buckle up. If you don't your love ones will suffer! She left three sons and is greatly missed by all.
