John's Story
Life after Gloversville High School -
After GHS, I graduated from Union College in 1958 with a BA in History, SUNY Albany in 1959 with an MA, and went into teaching. Taught 2 years in Voorheesville, NY, and 32 more years in Herkimer, NY. I taught all of the "Social Studies" including World History,American History, Government, Economics and Native American Studies. I retired from teaching in 1993.
I am currently Village Judge in the Village of Middleville, and Town Judge in the Town of Fairfield, Herkimer County.
I also own and operate JOHNS GUIDE SERVICE, which offers guided fly fishing trips and fly fishing instruction on the Ausable River, Delaware River, and West Canada Creek. I have personally fly fished in both fresh and salt water over much of the US and Alaska as well as Australia, New Zealand, Peru and Chile and Argentina.. I wrote one of the chapters in "Trophy Trout Streams of the Northeast", and am a major contributing editor to "Pro Series- Fly fishing for Trout", to be released by Globe Pequot Press in the spring of 2009
In 1990, Dawn and I went to Australia and we have travelled to many countries since then. These include New Zealand, Italy, Greece, France, Switzerland, Ireland , Scotland, Wales, Peru, and Chile.
We had a great GHS reunion in August 2004 (our 50th), and are making plans for #100 !!!
On Sept. 7, 2007, Dawn and I celebrated our 50th wedding anniversary, and In May of 2008, we went to my 50th reunion at Union College. In May of 2018, I was fortunate enough to attend my 60th at Union College. We had a class of 300 and there were 14 of us at the reunion!!
Time rolls on, but life is good, and to quote an old Native ...Expand for more
American saying, "May you live so well and so long that you will be your only relative" May this come true for all my wonderful friends and classmates, acquaintances, and students that I have had the pleasure of knowing all these years!!
After 43 years on the bench,I will be stepping down and retiring as the Town of Fairfield Judge on December 31, 2019!! It has been a large part of my life for 43 years, and I will miss many aspects of it, but the time has come ( "the walrus said, to speak of many things, of shoes and ships and sealing wax, of cabbages and kings"). I am still active in fly fishing and still operate my fly fishing guide business - JOHNS GUIDE SERVICE. . I have been so very fortunate over the years and wish the very best to all my classmates, students, and friends!!
Well, time rolls on and it is now 2023! I will be 88years old in November!! What a great life I have had the good fortune of living!!
I am no longer a teacher, judge ,or fly fishing guide!! Just JOHN SWEENEY!! I have some balance problems, but can still fly fish from a boat and do so frequently!! I am not sure how many members of the class of 1954 are still around, but would certainly enjoy hearing from any that are!!
I attended my 65th reunion at Union College in May!! 300 in that class, but only four of us at the reunion!! I am sure there are others who didn't make it because of travel problems. etc.
Have also been to the 60th reunion of the class of 1963 at Voorheesville HS, and the 50th reunion of the class of 1973 at Herkimer HS. I believe I had over 4500 students during my teaching career!! AND SO IT GOES!!! MY BEST TO ALL WHO TAKE THE TIME TO READ MY PROFILE!!
