John's Story

Life I received my degree in Economics with a double minor in Accounting and Finance in 1992. I was then recruited by the U.S. Treasury Department as a bank examiner, and relocated to Los Angeles shortly after graduating college. After the Northridge Earthquake I decided to move back to Denver, but left a few months later for Virginia. I've been bouncing around the Tech arena ever since, helping to design and streamline financial processes and systems for startups. Currently I'm creating and directing billing operations for a firm developing wireless CRM apps built around the Blackberry device. When I'm not doing finance geek stuff I am the CFO of a local animal rescue group called Capital Animal Care, where I also serve as a board member. We run a mobile spay/neuter clinic which offers free services to low-income pet owners in the DC area. In my personal life, I married in September 2002 and had our first child (a son) one year later. In my spare time I enjoy scuba diving, hiking, target shooting, wine tasting, gourmet cooking, and general joie de vivre. School Well, let's start...Expand for more
from the beginning.... Biggest crush is a good one. "Crush" implies a certain unattainable quality and I guess the best fit for that would be someone who sent me "secret admirer" notes during my sophomore year. I never knew who she was until three years later when someone spilled the beans while signing my yearbook. So Michelle, if you're reading this your notes meant more to me than you probably suspect. Most of my teachers inspired me, but I have to say at the top of the list would be D'Ann Sanko. Her class (AP English) was extraordinarily challenging for me but it instilled one major life lesson which I carry forth to this day: never be afraid to associate with people smarter or more talented than you. I learned a lot in that class and only about 50% of it had to do with English. If I could do it over again, I would do quite a few things differently. I was nearly invisible during my time at NGHS and I would make a better effort to get more involved and to be more social. Of the regrets I have in life, probably the most heartbreaking is how good friends have tended to drift apart.
