John's Story

My dad was a pilot in the USAF. As an Air Force brat, the family relocated to several locations in the US and abroad including Tripoli Libya. Brother and Sister were born in Tripoli. Dad received orders in '65 to fly missions from Ubon Thailand into Vietnam and other classified locations. Dad was attached to the 8th Tactical Fighter Wing and took part in Rolling Thunder (March ’66) and Operation Bolo with Colonel Olds. For unknown reasons, Dad clashed with Colonel Olds. Dad returned from SE Asia and moved the family to Houston in late 1967. Dad held a position as the Safety Officer for Ellington AFB at the time. Dad also wanted to relocate to Houston because of his interest in aerospace and NASA. Dad retired from the Air Force to pick up a career with Boeing Aerospace. Dad passed away in November 2014 and I admired him very much. - Started the Fifth grade at Clear Lake Elementary. Attended Clear Creek High School in my Freshman year. It was great to enter a new High School in my Sophomore year, we were the first to break in the school. I participated in a few activities but never fully participated in all that was offered in High School, which was a shame. Cannot say I really stood out, just another student with a low profile. Only a handful may remember me. While in High School, interesting group of Friends, a couple being Michael Hoover (his dad, Col. Hoover (retired) was the Army ROTC commander at the LaPorte HS, King Behan (whose dad was the bombardier on the Bockscar on August 9, 1945) another friend (last name only) Hoff whose dad was General Hoff, commander of the reserve in the area. The four of us got into a bit of trouble one night. - I attended San Jacinto College and earned an associate degree. Then attempted to put myself through the University of Houston to earn a degree in Electrical Engineering. Struggling financially, stopped and I joined the Houston Police Department in 1982. The offer was that they paid a salary and training, paid well at the time in 1982. As a Police Officer for the City of Houston. I will say it was a remarkably interesting career, learned a lot and worked with many great police officers. We had a new Police Chief, and we were the first graduating class for Chief Lee P. Brown. I worked with many professional and caring officers and good people. - The best part of my career with HPD was meeting Renee while working an extra job at a bank. She was a bank teller going to college. We were married in 1984 and I left the Houston Police Department and returned to college to pursue a degree in Computer Science, MIS, and Electrical Engineering. Attended the University of Houston after I decided to change careers and leave the Police Department. Renee has...Expand for more
been the best thing that ever happened to me. Our first child was named Sherri followed by Andrew. - The year 2014 was a major huge year of milestone. My wife turned the big Five-0 and surprised her with a cruise for just her and me to celebrate. My son graduated from the VAST program through Houston Community College. Our daughter is now married to a pretty good guy, Mechanical Engineer with Cameron. My wife and I went to Hawaii for three weeks and spent all of our time on the Big Island to celebrate 30 years of marriage. My dad passed away in November 2014. My mother mourned his death until she left this earth to meet him in July 2019. I miss them both. - What I do, I still enjoy my career with the same Engineering company since 1988. While I am in the IT department, what I do pertains to Corporate Systems Administration and integration of acquired companies. Update, I retired from Parsons, in March 2019. - As I updated this Bio in March of 2015 I learned, in late December, that my daughter is pregnant and in March had a "Reveal Party" to learn that I will have a grandson. This will be my wife and me, our first grandchild. The other grandparents, their first also, and they are thrilled. Our daughter and son-in-law will have two sets of grandparents to drive them nuts. The daughter gave birth to two more sons, a total of three now; Kaiden, Colton, and Ashton. Even the great-grandparents can help pitch in to spoil the child. Interesting point, the great-grandfather was a Texas State Senator and a radio talk show host many years ago. May remember Dan Patrick, Mike Richards, and one other I will not mention. - At this point, happy with how my life has turned out, beautiful wife at my side. Built a new Gehan home (Villanova) in League City and moved in September 2016. Our backyard backs up to the Friendswood City limits, no direct neighbors behind me. I am surrounded by a great family and friends. I have simple hobbies; Ham Radio Operator and I participate in competitive pistol shooting (IDPA). Never become famous or rich, but I am happy and sufficiently funded and surrounded by good friends, blessed to have a great wife and good friends. I have no regrets or sorrows for the path I took. I look forward to the future as I know my career will slowly set and all of us will eventually retire (if you have not already) to pursue new opportunities. Retired March 2019 and supporting our Real Estate Business. - To add, my wife is a realtor and if you are looking to sell or buy a home look her up on Facebook "Renee' Taylor-Realtor". I personally recommend her! Also, obtained my Real Estate license, and both Renee and I work together to help you find or sell your home. - John Class of 1975
