John's Story

The photo I posted was taken on 6-06-08 at the Knights of Columbus in Woodbridge. It was the class of 1963's "Red and Black" social; a warm-up to our 45th class reunion the following evening. From left to right: Neil Casey, me, Frank Rumpeltin, Diane Tappen, and Mary Tibak. After graduation, I attended Monmouth College for one year. If you knew me in high school, you may remember that I was never that fond of studying. There always seemed to be these "distractions!" Well, I was also distracted while attending Monmouth and as evidenced by a rather dismal grade point average, I wasn't invited back for a second year. Remember the draft? I received my draft notice in spring of 1965, but rather than go into the Army, I enlisted in the Marine Corps for three years. Duh! After basic and advanced training, I was eventually stationed at the Marine Corps Air Station in El Toro, CA. I was trained as an 1160 - a "Refrigeration Mechanic." Go figure. Anyway, I was one of the fortunate Marines who remained stateside during my enlistment, and upon my discharge in 1968, I remained in CA. Hmm . . . stay in CA or return to NJ? With a little help from the "G.I. Bill," I graduated with an AA degree from Santa Ana Community College in 1969, transferred to the University of Southern California and graduated in 1971 with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Public Administration, and again in 1973 with a Master of Public Administration. I finally got the hang of studying. I worked for a number of agencies associated with the Criminal Justice System in CA: California Youth Authority, the Delinquency Control Institute at USC, the City of Covina Police Department, and the City of Garden Grove Police Department. In 1978, I was hired by the Criminal Justice Dept. at Calif. State Univ., Long Beach (CSULB), to teach an undergraduate class in Statistics. I taught a number of different courses in the Crim Dept. at CSULB until I retired in 2005. However, even though I did retire from CSULB, the State of Calif. does allow retirees to teach a couple of classes each year. So, I can still be found on ca...Expand for more
mpus spring and fall semesters, T and TH 9:30 to 10:45 AM, teaching Crim 101: An Introduction to the Criminal Justice System. In addition to teaching at CSULB, I also taught statistics and research methods courses at USC, Pepperdine University, CSU Fullerton, University of La Verne, and several other local universities. Teaching was a fun career; maybe because I never thought of teaching at the university level as "work." On a more personal note, I was married (twice), but I seem to have gotten that out of my system. Marriage #1 did net one daughter, Sally Paige, who lives near Pittsburgh and works as the editor of "Inside Pool" magazine. From marriage #2, I was barely able to escape with the shirt on my back and my 10 year old Schipperke, Bear. Today, I live in Irvine, CA, with a very cool lady, Kathi, who likes to remind me (every so often) that she's 11 years my junior. I've taken up golf again and play, on average, once a week. I seem to have grown fonder of the 19th hole than of my handicap. However, my favorite sport has always been baseball, and remains that way. During the past three years, my very good buddy from Hopelawn, Gary Morgan (senior class V.P.) and I have taken baseball safaris to FL and AZ during baseball's spring training rites. Gary is a true beer aficionado, so together we (accent on "we") have the perfect relationship: beer and baseball! Well, other than playing golf and walking my two "dawgs," (a 12 year old Schipperke, Micro, and a 2 year old Yorkie, Zack Wheat), I also work with stained glass. If any of you recent retirees are looking for a great hobby, check out stained glass. If you get hooked on it, let me know, and I'll gladly exchange patterns and tips with you. You can contact me through Classmates.com. My Mom still lives at 10 Howard Street, Hopelawn (she's 93), and I visit with her in June and Nov. A small group of class of '63 graduates have been getting together for lunch during my visits. If you'd like to join in the festivities, let me know, and I'll keep you informed. Next visit: Nov. 12 - 17. Stay healthy and think young! jt
