John's Story

ME First, the "Now" pic of me is from 2004, in a tiny Persian cafe; good pics of me are infrequent at best … WAHI I was a nerdy kid who liked things like Physics and Chemistry, etc. I played mediocre baritone in the band & have some memories of a Guys Glee Club or some such ('If I were a Rich Man', etc.) A WAHI MEMORY I only ever remember skipping ONE class (TOLD you I was nerdy - or maybe just forgetful). I was taking "Humanities", I believe it was called. Overall, one of my favorite courses. Anyway, got to class and Prof XYZ from Whitman was speaking again. Nope, couldn't handle it & took off (from the Music Bldg) toward the Science building, with Kieth Myers, think it was. Anyway, we run into Chuck Patterson (one of the 3 team teachers). He says to us, "Gentlemen, class is behind you, you're going the wrong way!" To which I said, "Prof XYZ is there, YOU'RE going the wrong way!" He just grinned his impish Chuck Patterson grin. He was MUCH too honest to argue, so we each carried on our respective diametrically opposed ways. I never heard anything more about it - no repercussions. COLLEGE But I digress (as usual). I was a prof's brat so I went to Whitman, in Physics. One of my fav courses was from Paul Dewey (I think), an Art Dept. prof. Another tale: Whitman. Pre-registration mini classes (20 min adverts by the Profs. I had dragged John Gallagher to a bunch of geeky (current term) Science ads , so I owed him. He wanted to check out Dewey's Art History class; whatever. Fascinating! Literally ran right out and signed right up for it. Loved it. 3 years later brother Jim (still of WW), took it. My mom even took it! Come to think of it, 'bout 5 years ago, my daughter was quite taken with Art History in college for a while - I see her massive A.H. tome (Gardener's) on the shelf right beside me. My old Jansen (Jensen?) is nowhere to be seen. Hmmmm. CAREER After grad ('74) I moved back to Canada. There I took Education (University of British Columbia = UBC) and taught Physics & Computer Science in Terrace, BC for a dozen years. Terrace: think southern tip of the Alaskan pan handle but inland (east), oh, 50 miles. There I met my wife & eventually had 2.8 kids there. 2 daughters. CAREER AND … ( PART 2) We then moved here, 20 miles WNW of Vancouver, BC, where my son was born within 2 months - finishing out the 0.8 of a kid above. Taught Computers, Math, Chemistry & Physics for another 20 years before Parkinson's cut my teaching career a bit (3 yrs) short. While I don't recommend it, there are MUCH worse diseases to acquire. As I experience it ('mileage may vary'), it is very FRUSTRATING! Frustration beats pain, hands down!! Alas, some of my former activities are no longer doable, but others are (see below). KIDS The aforementioned kids are all in their 20s. I lucked out - in spite of my contribution of half their genes, they are great kids and I have enjoyed at least 95% of my fatherhood to date (its hard when they are going thru hard things). Oldest daughter (UBC) and son (SFU = Simon Fraser University) are both studying Psychology. Middle daughter Cathy just completed a Bachelors in Sociology (SFU) and has been living in Taiwan for most of the past 3 years. WIFE I met my wife 35 years ago (almost to the day - mid Nov.). She retires from Lab technology at the end of the month! She will be taking classes toward doing volunteer work teaching immigrants English & reading. She loves to walk/hike - something I can't do with her anymore due to the aforementioned PD. She has just found a MeetUp group that walk/hike at her level. They just did a very wet 4 hr hike to a viewpoint - without the view in the rain. CURRENT ANTICS - PART 1 (TRIKIN MY BLUES AWAY…) I ride a trike. In fact I have 4, so if you drop by, we can go for a ride together. These trikes may not be what you are envisioning - neither in design nor cost. When Life hands you lemons, make LemonAde, and that is the name of my first trike (some believe that trikes must be named …): LemonAde is a yellow HP Velotechnik Scorpion FX (folding). One sweet ride! It is a tadpole design, meaning 2 wheels in front (steered) and one in the rear (drive). German manufacture. 5+k new LemonBead is a yellow Sidewinder Cruiser Pro. Also a tadpole but the 2 front wheels are driven (w/ differential) and the rear wheel steers. I have an electric battery/motor kit for it somewhere, but I removed it due to its weight and the fact that I am still perfectly capable of providing the requisite power. It also folds. US manufacture. 2k used LemonSeed is a black and silver SUN UX3 (or somesuch). It is a delta design with 2 rear wheels (one driven; no diff) and one front steered wheel. You sit both higher and more upright on it with some loss of cornering stability as a result. It i...Expand for more
s quite adjustable in length and is my wife's fav. China manufacture. 1.1k used Wait for it … LemonDeed (aka LemonIndeed) is a yellow Greenspeed GTO. It is a rear wheel drive tadpole (like 'Ade). It has 72 speeds. Excessive? Thot so initially, but I love it! 24 starting/uphill speeds (I use maybe 9 of them), 24(9) level speeds and 24(9) downhill speeds AND I can shift between the ranges whilst stopped! Very useful. Non-folding but can in principle be easily broken in half (if I buy a special wrench and shift connectors $25-$50). Aussie manufacture. 0.4k used but 4k new, such a deal!! MORE TRIKING I have an idiot simple rear vehicle rack - I know, I designed it. I can have the any of the 3 tadpoles on the back of my 4Runner in 5 min or so. The delta takes a different rack (not quite as simple). All doable by 1 man, tho the actual 15 second lift IS easier for 2). If the canoe (see below) is along, as on my October trip to WW, it fits neatly over the front sprocket, but add 1 - 2 min for pedal removal/replacement. AND MORE - I JUST KNOW YOU WANT MORE! As, especially on the tadpoles, one is VERY low to the ground, each trike can sport any one of 4 'flags' 5' to 6' tall. All are gayly colored (some both senses of the word - i.e. rainbow). Two of them twirl madly in the resulting breeze - attracting even more driver attention. We travel all over BC, Alberta, Idaho, Washington and Oregon to ride MUPs (= Multi Use Paths), mostly paved and up to 70 miles in length. Often I am joined by my (retired) neighbor and/ or my brother-in-law. Spouses too on occasion. My have I prattled on! CANOEING I took up canoeing after college, then kayaking, then canoeing again. I still canoe quite often, tho with modifications. I use to LOVE to solo canoe. When soloing I kneel. About the first day of summer, 2004, I got a DVT (blood clot) this way. As a result, I don't solo much anymore and when I do, I stop every 50 - 100 strokes to stretch my legs. Awkward and FRUSTRATING - but again, not painful. Tandem paddling I have my legs straight with my feet on the foot brace - no kinked gardenhose/vein concerns. However, with my PD, sometimes my arm & leg muscles spontaneously go wonky. Suddenly 20% former power. No major issue. At full power, I'm prerty good & 20 % is enough (I no longer whitewater). BUT, sometimes my balamve goes wonky too. MAJOR ISSUE. No balance in a canoe = STRESS Stress + PD = Anxiety Attack (AA) = vicious cycle ¬, NOT pretty. So far this has never happened in a WIND and I have been able to curb the AA and make it back (& am always with several other canoes). For this reason, I only paddle with VERY strong bow paddlers - 2 women 5 - 10 yrs my seniors (both skilled) or my neighbor (2 yrs my senior, not skilled too but strong as an ox). And, of late, 'training wheels' - actually, a pair of pontoons that I can easily deploy. Haven't had to yet. WOODWORKING & MODEL RAILROADING Other hobbies: I'm slowly getting into woodworking (I have a fairly complete, VERY cramped "µshop" (= microshop). Much larger, next house. Also slowly getting into Model RR (HO scale, 1910 coastal logging) I have several steam engines including two geared drive locos - a 3 truck Shay and a 2 truck Heisler. Saving up for a Climax (nothing to do with sex). No layout yet (no room); also next house! LANGUAGES For no apparent reason, I have become preoccupied with languages. I have been actively (but slowly) learning Mandarin and passively learning phrases in any language for which I can make an opportunity. E.g. , at a (new!) Korean BBQ today I learned "Gye-san-so Joo-se-yo" (= "Bring me the bill, please"). Unlike Mandarin, I am NOT learning Korean characters. Mostly restaurant talk from ethnic restaurants. But not all. In prep for triking the wonderful Yakima Greenbelt MUP this fall, I learned "A su isqueirda, por favor!" (= "On your left, please"). I ALWAYS pass Hispanics there - but not last time. Oh well. TOSTAS CON CABEZA I've got the guy at a Taco Wagon in Bellingham trained. I can order in Spanish but last time he asked me a question (in Spanish) about where I wanted to eat. I shrugged - no-comprende. He made me learn the new vocab! "¿A dónde vas a comer? En la mesa o en coche?" I've always been a reasonably generous tipper, but he wasn't taking any chances - he knows me! IN CONCLUSION… The point to all this? Aside from the daughter living in Taiwan, none! But I'm having fun! My brother, a Birder, learns new birds, my wife does crosswords and I exercise MY few remaining little grey cells with this. 8^) I may well be crazy, and/or boring, but I'm never bored. Back to my Mandarin characters - one more dictation exercise before bed! 再見! 曜憨 A Chinese version of John ("Yao-han", meaning: Magnificent foolishness - I chose it myself 8^)
