John's Story
Harborfields was fun. I played J.V. football, varsity lacrosse and I enjoyed wrestling. My most fond memories are old girlfriends and "the boys". They were a good bunch of kids.
My attendence, grades and smart guy attitude landed me before a judge where I was given a choice between an upstate reform school or an enlistment in the military.
The Navy was a blast. I spent almost 3 years on an old WWII destroyer (USS Bordelon DD881) as an IC3 traveling to South America, the Med and the North Atlantic.
After completing my enlistment, I returned to Long Island and worked at the V.A. Hospital in Northport. Weeks later an old high school friend introduced me to my future wife.
For years I had wanted to go into police work. This past June (2008), I completed my 27th year with the Houston Police Department. During my career I've work...Expand for more
ed patrol as an officer and gangs and tactical narcotics as a sergeant. Today, I am a lieutenant assigned to the Incident Management Division. I still enjoy my job and though I am eligible to retire, I won't. I can't picture myself not being a part of this unique environment.
In 1982 I married a beautiful person. Joan is an Occupational Therepist and rehabs handicapped children. We have two boys ages 20 and 16. They're great kids, honor roll, sports, choir, everything. The oldest is a sophmore in college, and the youngest is a junior in high school.
In addition to my police career, I have a B.S. and an M.A. from the University of Houston, at Clear Lake. I'm also an adjunct instructor of Sociology and Criminology at a local college in N.E. Houston.
I look forward to teaching full time when I retire from the department.
