John's Story
Just when I -- and a few other people -- thought it wouldn't happened, I finally finished my doctorate in religion at Duke and moved to Northeast Tennessee to begin teaching at a small liberal arts college in 2005. In the style of my high school writing, it was a long and wide-ranging volume. So I traded part-time teaching and the struggle to write a few pages a week for a teaching load that includes 4 classes per semester and a schedule 3/4 filled with required freshman general education courses. I married a fellow Central High band member, Mary Hunter, after I finished my bachelor's degree and we are about to celebrate our 25th anniversary. We have 2 children, the oldest of whom is about to turn (gasp!) 13. So now we spend out time transporting our son and daughter to track meets, soccer games, school musicals and plays, baseball and softball games, dance classes, and whatever else they come up with.
We live in a small city where it is impossible to go anywhere without running into someone you know and where the local paper prints write-ups of Little League baseball and softball games.
