John's Story

Life Update: I'm a widower now as my wife died on June 29th 2012. Not easy raising 2 teens as a single father now I was married for a couple years in the early 90's, not quite sure what the hell I was thinking at the time that I said I do but thankfully it only lasted a couple years and we didn't have any kids. Now I've been married since 1996 to a wonderful women with 2 kids. She's the type of women that I wouldn't of ever thought I had a chance with back in HS. My wife is a Nurse that specializes in Paraplegics when she was doing private duty home care. She then moved on to working at drug and alcohol rehab but is taking some time off now to help out at the school where our kids attend. I named my son after a kid that was killed at 12 by a drunk driver. He was my best friend and not a day goes by that I don't think of him, Only a couple people in this class would know who he was. Brian Spitzbarth. His older brother was in the class of 1986. I Donated a kidney to my mom back in 1999 to keep her alive. Proved to a lot of people that I wasn't going to do nothing with my life and instead I do things with computers that it takes a degree from MIT to do. I received my GED and went to OCC for a couple terms until I went for some testing and found out that I had ADD and Dyslexia. Now I understand why I never did well in school and was always bored in class. I do wish I would've graduated so I could attend the reunion's. If there's any more coming up and I may attend, please let me know. I speak at companies about computer security, teach seminars, owned my own consulting company and have been on TV and in Print many times speaking about computer security. In the process of finishing up my third book that will be published sometime in 2007 on Wireless Network Security. My second one was on RF Security and I was the Tech Editor of that one. I run one of the largest websites on the internet based on Personal Wireless devices. I'm far from the person that I was when I was back in school as you can see in my picture, less hair and about 50 lbs heavier. As I've said for the last 10+ years, meeting my wife is the best thing that ever happened to my life next to my kids. She helped me find my center in life. I would love to meet up with some old classmates or friends from school. I ...Expand for more
doubt many people even remember me or know who I am so the list is small but still the same applies. I train and compete in MMA, (Mixed Martial Arts) and compete in the octagon, yes I do fight in a cage. No I'm not crazy, I do it because I like to compete. My son's into boxing and wrestling so I've been involved in training him in both. He's got some serious power in both hands and can really man handle anyone he's on the mat with. School What can I say about school other then there's a LOT of things I would do over again. I was more focused on cars then anything else. I played around with computers but nobody ever knew it for obvious reasons. My son suffers from the same issues that I had in school with ADHD and Dyslexia and our daughter is a complete BRAIN!!! She's been tested and they've wanted to move her up 2 grades , I know she didn't get that from me but her focus and work ethic she did get from her old man. LOL. School was just something to pass the time, yea I dropped out and plenty of people figured I'd never do anything with my life. If they could only see me now, or if they have seen me since I've been on TV a few times for Computer security stories or I've spoken at their companies, I bet a LOT of jaws hit the floor. I'm making sure that my kids never made the same mistakes that I did in school and my wife is doing the same. If I had the option to go through it all again, you can bet your butt that I would. Who knows, I may have added another $100k to my current salary. Workplace After school I did a lot of Construction work while going to OCC for a degree in Computer Science. I Worked for the Government as a Information Security Consultant for quite a few years until the traveling got to my wife and myself from being away from the kids for so long. I Owned a computer consulting company specializing in Network Security for 6 years but that just wasn't something that was keeping me happy so I took a full time position at a company in Oxford Michigan as the Chief Security Officer. Due to downsizing I was laid off and now I'm working for a fortune 500 consulting company in Troy as the head of Network Security. Computers is something I just naturally picked up and am very good at. 3 published books about computer and wireless security, I better be good. :) .
