John's Story

The (now) picture was taken in the summer of 2008 in the dinghy (Chelsea) for our boat (Chesapeake). The boats were named after two, Yorkie litter mates who recently went to "Doggie Heaven." My wife, Reba, and I live in a waterfront house on Orcas Island and Reba's mother lives in our guest house. After graduation from Shoreline HS in '59, I attended Seattle Pacific College (majoring in engineering physics) for a year. Then, I transferred to the U of W and majored in Electrical Engineering. I married early in my senior year (1963), received a BSEE degree in 1964 and then went to work for NASA in Houston, Texas. While at NASA I continued with post graduate studies at Rice University and the University of Houston at Clear Lake. At NASA, I created the system design for the Apllo ground communications network - a new (and, at the time, radical) design that replaced ground controllers with computers and concentrated flight control in the Mission Control Center in Houston. I was in Mission Control when we first landed on the moon, during Apollo 13 and later, when Skylab had a catastrophic launch. I had many friends on the Challenger, clearly the worst memory of my time with NASA. In my last NASA position, I had technical management responsibility for the design and development of the Space Shuttle communications and data system. I received the NASA Exceptional Service Medal for design of the TDRSS (Tracking and Data Relay Satellite System) and a high level award from NSA (National Security Agency) for design of the Space Shuttle's encryption and command authentication system. While at NASA, I married Reba in 1977 - probably the best thing I ever did. We have now been married for 32 wonderful years! After twenty years, I left NASA and co-founded a couple of high tech companies specializing in the design of advanced communications system. We designed the world's first direct broadcast satellite system and also the first satellite communications system for semi-submersible (floating) drill rigs. Next, I was co-founder of a San Diego company that designed and operated this country's first nationwide, wireless text messaging company and the world's first ...Expand for more
international wireless text messaging company (Metrocast). After Metrocast, I founded a wireless gateway company (NDC) in Del Mar, CA (San Diego area). I started with 14 employees and grew the company to over 1,400 people in five years. A number of international joint ventures were also formed during this time and new work was done in the areas of speech recognition and voice compression technologies. Reba and I moved to Virginia Beach, VA seven years ago. I was brought in as Vice President and CTO (Chief Technology Officer) to (I found out later) attempt to save the company. It had gone through a huge amount of investor's money and was down to its last million dollars. I did create a new technology that probably would have saved the company but it was too late. I bought the technology I had created and the pending patent I had written from the bankruptcy court. The company's VP of Sales and Marketing and I formed a new company (bVoice Corporation) to commercialize the technology. But, we found out that it was difficult to raise venture capital because the patent had not been granted. At that point, (three years ago) Reba and I decided to move back to God's country and we bought our present house on Orcas Island. After three years, the U.S. Patent office granted the patent and interest in bVoice picked up. We are currently in discussions with several companies regarding an investment in bVoice Corporation, finalization of its operational software and launch of its service. We hope to launch bVoice service sometime this year. 2010). Reba and I are really enjoying living on Orcas Island. We are members of the Orcas Island Yacht Club (where I am Rear Commodore and enjoy cruising the San Juan Islands and the Canadian Gulf Islands with our resuce Yorkie, Sea Biscuit). We have three boys (two of mine and one of hers)who still live in Houston and five grandchildren. We still like to stay active with skiing, kayaking and running and have run in a number of half marathons. Reba enjoys gardening and has already transformed our yard and planted a large vegtable garden (from seed). We enjoyed seeing many of you at the last Shoreline '59 reunion.
