John's Story

Update 2023 Life I graduated from Texas A&M in 1969. I "joined the Navy to see the world", and they sent me to this little county in SE Texas called Florida. I stayed in Jacksonville when I got out. I'm married with one son. My wife, Kathy, taught gifted science and math at the local Middle School, and was Teacher of the Year there (2001-02). Son, Jay, graduated from the University of West Florida in Pensacola, married last year and gained two step-kids, and now teaches HS math. I refereed HS and club soccer (1993-2006)) and have done CW reenactments (since Feb 1978). The pictures show me as a Lt. Col./Col in the 1st New York Engineers, and as Commanding General of the Department of the south. I still play cornet in a community band, trumpet occasionally at Church, and Bugle frequently for CW events on the East Coast. I am also the Bugler for our local veterans' Honor Guard. I get back to Texas too infrequently. When I do, it's usually for family, HS, and A&M reunions. I'd like to move back but Kathy (native Floridian) won't let me. I spent about 30 years as a Structural Engineer for a Naval Architecture/Marine Engineering firm (Sept 1974). I've worked on everything from Carriers to frigates, and am currently involved in a new amphibious transport (LHD) program and CG overhauls. I next became a HS/MS Math and Physics teacher, retiring from that in 2014. After subbing for another couple of years, I'm now completely retired. I'm currently doing projects around the house. The garage was converted to a library, so I have somewhere to put my 400+ history books (about 2/3 are CW), and Kathy has her office space/reading room. My office is in the back of the new, larger, detached garage... which has become my workshop. I also enjoy building stuff for the house and the wife's school. way but in the same industry. I started on the drawing board to get familiar with shipbuilding (not a big effort, since I had been in the Navy after graduating from A&M), and became a senior Structural Engineer. I then spent a year with another firm doing casino barges...not a lot of challenge there, just daily arrangement changes. I worked on almost everything the Navy has (above the surface), from Frigates to Aircraft Carriers, and some commercial work, including the 415' "American Queen" Mississippi riverboat. I taught Geometry and Algebra II in a local HS. My second year, I switched to teaching Physics instead of Math. Update 7/30/2014, 4/3/2023 I retired after 8 years of teaching Physics and Math on 10 June. Right now, it's still summer vacation, retirement won't start until everyone else goes back to school on 11 August. We have a grandson, Evan, who is 4 1/2 (as of this writing), and a handful. I've already turned into my grandfather and started building him stuff... for his yard, the converted shed, his room... love him. We celebrated our retirements (Kathy retired last year after 35 years with DCPS) with a cruise from Montreal down the St. Lawrence River, to Quebec, Prince Edward Island, Cape Breton Island, Nova Scotia, Maine, and Boston. Other vacation trips included to London prior to going to France to observe a solar eclipse, ending in Amsterdam; another trip to France, cruising the Seine between Paris and Rouen, with a side trip to Normandy; a two week excursion via train, coach, and ship to Alaska and the Yukon; a cruise from Montreal down the St. Lawrence and around to Boston; and a week in Iceland. This year (2023) we're starting in Arizona at the Grand Canyon, then heading north through several National Parks to Yellowstone. In the past two years, I've had a pacemaker "installed" and underwent double by-pass surgery. Doing fine, now. JDP
